Aluminum Coolant Overflow Tank

Hello peeps!

After my engine swap my mechanic decided that he should overtighten the cap on my coolant overflow tank to a point where he destroyed the threads. Since that was my second tank so far (my mopar cracked around 10 years ago) I thought that it might be a good idea to give it a go buying one of those aluminum ones sold online.

Has anyone tried any of those? They seem to have the exact same design regardless of the seller.

Are they a direct fit replacement ?

Could be really nice but IMO it all depends on the quality of the welds and fitment.

Found those on ebay. Not sure if it's against the forum terms to share it here, but you can search for Jeep KJ coolant expansion tank.

It seems to be a direct fit (according to the seller), and definitely cheaper than buying a brand new mopar part.

I've been looking into this recently after my cheap amazon crap broke and has caused way to many problems and I'm interested if it might be something worth doing

If you're replacing the coolant overflow tank, do yourself a favor and use the Dorman part.

is there any downside to using an aluminum though?
I like how they look and I'd assume they'd be stronger/won't start changing color after a few months

IMO, the only problem with aluminum would be the quality of the welds, and since this is apparently "Hecho in China", they are also automatically suspect until someone does a physical inspection on one. And even then, the welds may or may not be the same quality between different tanks. Thats aid, as long as there is a warranty on it, then this might be something to look into.

I'm buying off ebay, would that still be an issue?

Like this or similar, there's only a couple options

Well if you look at both the neutral and the negative reviews it seems like variable weld quality and fitment are an issue on bout 1 in 10 of those who leave a review.

I see, so it may not be the best quality product to buy

this is another one that apears to be the same thing, just different brand

Definitely looks better than the plastic tank. I wonder if it has internal chambers like the oem one?

I'd wait a couple months for it to show up on Amazon for $30 bucks before I'd try one. Of course my stock one is still working just fine at 20 years and 175,000+ miles.

I mean my stock one had no problem it just got ugly and we wanted to be able to see coolant level

I was able to clean mine out really well on the CRD when I had everything drained for the 200k timing belt change.

No, like the plastic yellowed and stained, not somthing cleanable

Mine was too yet it stilled mostly cleaned.
