I went to the Crutchfield website and ordered a Sony stereo with Bluetooth capabilities and sony speakers. Works great.
I found an open box Atoto F7 on eBay and while it has been a little bit glitchy, it has great sound and runs Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Very happy with this low budget solution.
Edit, this was for my XK 07 Commander. My KK 08 Liberty still has the stock stereo, but modded with a bluetooth chip tied into the back of the Aux jack.

I went to the Crutchfield site but it doesn't list 2016 Liberty as an option. What vehicle option did you use? Thanks for your input

dang it! I was all set to go unicorn hunting for a ‘16!
HAve to buy the correct harness/interface. I believe it is pac rp4 ch11. Its like 150 bux. Then you can hook an after market radio to your jeep. You can not just directly wire a radio because of the jeeps TIPM will not recognize it. It has to meet the correct voltage and this harness does that. There could be an aftermarket version of this harness if you hunt. I just wanted to get it over with.

2005 Jeep Liberty Sport, purchased used in 2012.
I bought a receiver about 10 years ago, also from Crutchfield. The stereo didn't sound that great when I got it and a CD got stuck, so I decided to replace the unit. As I got into it I realized that the little buttons on the back of the steering wheel were controls for the stereo system, but when I found all these extra wires I realized that whoever had replaced the stereo before me had cut the wires for the steering control. Oh well. It still sounded like crap after I installed the new unit so I started looking at the speakers. The two in the front door panels were trashed, and the previous owner had tried to fix the the torn cones with silicone caulking. That didn't work. I put in a second order to Crutchfield for door speakers. The CSR I spoke with said the factory speakers were some weird wattage and he'd try and get me as close as he could. It sounded much better after the new speakers! I didn't do anything with the rear door speakers, but over the years one of those has cut out, too. I also didn't do anything with the small speakers in the dashboard.
Now, after several years of driving my wife's RAV4, I want Android Auto. I went to a local car stereo shop that's been around forever and they gave me quotes for a JVC wireless system or a Pioneer wired setup, plus install. It's going to be about $1,300 for the wired install with front and rear speakers, so I'm trying to mentally justify that expense! I'm probably going to go wired after the first of the year. I'm wary about how much the screen will cover the A/C vents, if at all.

Save your bread DavieB and get a single DIN sony or pioneer, Connect with bluetooth and call it a day. Save a bunch of cash, and no one wants to steal that single DIN unit anyway.

For my 2004 Liberty Renegade I was able to find a new faceplate that allowed me to install a double din unit with Apple Car Play. I love it! My Google Maps is on the screen like new cars. Also has a backup camera connected. World of difference for the daily drive experience. Mine also has HD Radio Receiver that opened up many more FM stations. And can play anything from your phone including streaming like Pandora or audio books.

That there is sweet! Did you have to carve up anything behind the head unit to fit it in there?

Just a small bit. Not much. As I recall a brace needed some trimming.

As a followup to the question about cutting anything in the back - while I have the dash apart for heater issue a snapped a pic of area behind the radio. In the bottom corner you can see I had to cut away some plastic. I think that was it.
