Yes thay aren't cheap! I doubt you will have any issues with the conventional lead acid, my other two cars have them.- KJowner

Front end wheel resistance??
Possibly, if the boot is damaged then definitely, but don't discount the wheel bearing, the big unitary bearings can feel OK when you spin the wheel but awful under real load, cheap Chinese bearings last around a year so don't be tempted by the price! I'd jack it up and have a feel and listen to...- KJowner

The ECU controls the voltage supplied by the alternator the same way to the Automatic Voltage Regulator on a generator controls the voltage by varying the field strength. It's the same system on the gas and diesels. Why they decided this was necessary instead of a conventional regulated...- KJowner

Any noise? The front propshaft CV joint is worth checking too, the small boot splits and it fills up with mud.- KJowner

A Fluke will do nicely, switch it to DC and measure the voltage at the battery terminals. I'd guess you wouldn't see much more than a fluttering 13.5v as the ECU runs as an AVR on our setup. As I said earlier, I've had a redtop on my CRD for years and it's been excellent, the specs for charging...- KJowner

I doubt old dirty oil and a dirty filters will be doing it any favours. Try disconnecting the battery overnight, that will reset it.- KJowner

Yes, always worth investigating the cheaper options first, wear depends how the engine has been looked after and how it's been driven. Short journeys wear much more than long ones. A compression test is a good gauge of wear especially if you do it wet and dry. Assuming the compression is good...- KJowner
