if you haven't touch your petcock in a while then I think most people avoid touching it.
There's an Oring on the end of it that may cause sealing issues if it damaged.
there's also the engine block coolant drain plug as well. Something that I don't personally dare to venture.
mopar thermostat will come with one.
if memory serves me right. mopar gasket wont have a key to register to a notch on some t-stat housing.
Remember to install the t-stat w/ the correct orientation!
on the KJ, you can cut a small notch on the bottom of the HD shroud so it'll provide some clearance from the clutch fan which would allow one to remove the shroud without removing the clutch fan.

the right side of the reservoir tank is the overflow side.
I would get a loaner tool from your local autoparts store and pressurize your system.
There might be a leak in your reservoir or system.
I would also check the radiator cap as well with the tool.
