Grey smoke - lots of it!

Sorry everyone for not responding and thank you for your replies, all of which I shall follow up on once I'm properly back on my feet after the last 9 days in hospital.

Grey smoke - lots of it!

Can you explain in a little more detail how to check the glow plugs please?

Grey smoke - lots of it!

It's an early 2005. I know it's a 2005 model because I bought some new front indicator lenses and they didn't fit as they were for a 2004 model!

Grey smoke - lots of it!

Well, now I am more puzzled than ever. This morning, not having started the Jeep since Friday I thought I'd see whether the smoke is still as bad. Guess what? No smoke. It's as though it was all burnt off the other day. Then I remembered that the day before I started it and it smoked so badly...

Grey smoke - lots of it!

Thinking more about this (excuse my ignorance), is the inlet manifold water cooled? If so, would water accumulating in it cause the symptoms I have described? As I have tried to describe, I'm talking about huge clouds of white or light grey smoke that don't clear for a few minutes, suggesting...

Grey smoke - lots of it!

Other than the smoke it runs very well and in fact my Wife prefers driving it to our Mercedes C class, though it does take a while to start in the winter. What I don't understand us that it runs for so long before the smoke clears. Even on tick-over when just started after standing for a day or...

Grey smoke - lots of it!

Thanks. I'm a bit under the weather at the moment but once I get around to it I'll let you know how I get on. On the other hand, if it's the head gasket, how could so much water be being burnt off for several minutes? Where would it have accumulated? Surely not in one or more of the cylinders?

Grey smoke - lots of it!

Thanks for responding. The best way to check if it’s the EGR? How about if I disconnect the water pipes to the EGR and join them together temporarily (so bypass it) and then leave the Jeep for a couple of days to see if it doesn’t happen when I start it up? Does that make any sense?

Grey smoke - lots of it!

I hope someone can help as it's driving me to distraction. I have a 2005 KJ 2.8 CRD. It loses water slowly but I've never found out why. Recently, though, if it isn't used for a day or two on first starting up it blows a lot of whitish smoke which disappears after a few minutes. Yesterday...

2.8 CRD Cherokee KJ overheating when A/c on

I have no idea what HOAT is and suspect that I won't be able to buy it here in SW France. When I first bought the Jeep I completely drained and flushed several times the cooling system and then refilled with ordinary antifreeze bought from the local supermarket. That was about 2 years ago. When...

2.8 CRD Cherokee KJ overheating when A/c on

I wonder if anyone can help me with this? My 2005 Cherokee (Liberty) 2.8 CRD runs very well and the temperature gauge stays in the central position on the gauge. Even in 35C (it’s very hot here at the moment in SW France and 40C is forecast for Sunday) this doesn’t change. However, as soon as I...

    Blanking plate for the EGR

Hello again. Well, I fitted a new MAP sensor and, guess what, it passed the retest! Thanks for all suggestions, all very much appreciated. I'll now await warmer weather and have a look at cleaning the EGR etc.

    Blanking plate for the EGR

Thanks everyone for your input. Most appreciated. I hae found what appears to be another sensor on the airbox ahead of the MAP sensor - it has a small diameter prong with a very small circular aperture. Could be the barometric pressure sensor? Anyway I sprayed MAF cleaner into it and gently blew...

    Blanking plate for the EGR

Thank you for that. Despite cleaning the MAF and MAP sensors it failed again, with P0069 still coming up on the Test Centre's results screen. I had it wiped half an hour before the test but the drive to the Centre of about 8 kms (5 miles) brought it up again. Are you suggesting that I buy a new...

    Blanking plate for the EGR

Thanks for that. Very helpful. Mine is the lower electronic one. I decided to try to clean it without removing it and have been out and bought an EGR cleaning kit locally from the French equivalent of Halfords in the UK. Not cheap at €38. It contains a liquid to add to the fuel and a spray with...

    Blanking plate for the EGR

I think I'll have to do what you suggest and take it for a run. I've this morning removed the battery and fuel filter and I'm not sure that I'm looking at the EGR. If I am it looks like a pig of a job. I've done some difficult jobs in my time but this looks almost impossible. I can see what I...

    Blanking plate for the EGR

Thanks for the replies and my apologies for the delay in responding. I cleaned the MAF sensor, which was full of debris, using a MAF cleaner bought on the 'net. Oh, and the air cleaner is relatively new having been installed only 3,000 miles ago. I've also removed and cleaned the MAP sensor...

    Blanking plate for the EGR

Somewhere on here or perhaps on the internet I found a diagram for making a blanking plate to close off the EGR system but before I do it what else has to be done, if anything? Is there a sensor to disconnect, for example? As the Jeep (2005 KJ 2.8CRD) has failed its test on emissions (mentioned...

My 2.8 CRD failed its test on emissions

Hi there. Hope someone can help. I took my Cherokee (Liberty) 2.8 CRD for its 2-yearly test last week and it failed on emissions. The actual wording (translated from the French) was; The opacity exceeds the received value or the measurements are unstable. The OBD system reading indicates a...
