Replacing the cv at the will take 20‐30 minutes longer and you'll save lots of money doing it. There are multiple lengths of drive shaft depending on configuration. Many have struggled to get the correct one first time, but the cvs are all the same.

I assume you don't have the the knuckle (upper ball joint) attached as that would just make it more difficult. Sometimes a little persuasion in the form of a pry bar or large screwdriver is needed. Don't tighten anything until bolts are in place.

Could be so many different things making a clunk. Can't tell by just looking. Put the parts cannon away and google how to check your ball joints. Could be upper or lower or something else entirely.
