Electrical short - smoke from left rear - 2002 Liberty

Well, there's your problem... Trailer light controller completely fried. It was tucked in under the tail light assembly, hence the smoke coming from that neighborhood. So I cut the whole trailer light rig out, replaced my brake & turn signal fuses, and all is good. I couldn't find any of that...

Electrical short - smoke from left rear - 2002 Liberty

Yes, that's the one thing I'm sure of. :) The smoke was coming from within the body and not from the wheel/brake assembly. I wish it was brakes as I'm a whole lot more comfortable dealing with them than anything electrical!

Electrical short - smoke from left rear - 2002 Liberty

That's my first place to check, but the way the smoke was coming out, I don't think I'll be that lucky. Fingers crossed, but I expect it will be further forward than what can be reached via the tail light housing. :icon_frown:

    2002 Liberty overheating

Two updates: 1) putting 12v directly to the fan's leads started it up right away. But it did sound a bit rough and i don't like that it took a whack to get it going yesterday, so will probably swap it out regardless. 2) on closer inspection, I have a leaky rad. :( So it looks like I'll be...

    2002 Liberty overheating

Thanks folks! If it is the fan, any advice re swapping out the fan motor vs changing the whole fan assembly for an after-market assembly?

    2002 Liberty overheating

Hi all, My 2002 Liberty (3.7l) overheated on the way home from work the other day. I assumed thermostat and so replaced that. Didn't help. Now, the temp will rise to normal and stay there for a while - about 10-15 minutes or so - and then spike rapidly up. When I got home from my test...
