are the 04 trannies setup kind of soft? Mine seems to shift really lightly. I heard some of the newer like 07 and 08s as well shift pretty hard. In general, if soft shifting is a problem, what can fix it? I know that it could be wearing the ****** excessively and I would like to prevent that as much as possible. I think about my old 03 with the GOOD ****** every day btw. :( My Jeep I know has sat for long periods of time. Could this be a cause? I'm really thinking about getting the fluid and filter changed out soon. I notice a light shift into 2nd, but other gears seem "normal".

Yes, the 42rle is a 'soft' shifting ******. There is a shift kit(more of a 'correction' kit) but some say it doesnt firm them up as much(if any) as they would like.

There is nothing wrong with the 42rle. If there was then they would be dieing left and right.

Get the fluid and filter changed every 30k. I also like to unhook the battery at every ****** oil change so it can relearn. It should last you along time unless you abuse it. IE, letting it shift alot when it shouldnt be, not using 4low offroad when you should, etc.
