I’m new here, can’t seem to find a thread about the problem I’m having, any help would be a appreciated. I have an 04 Jeep Liberty 42RLE with 189,000 miles. Just did the trans service, filter, gasket, & fluid in hopes that it would fix my problem which is that it won’t go into park, it just keeps rolling. It did catch a couple time but 90% of the time it just keeps rolling. Any advice?

Hi - My simple answer is "I don't know",
but seems like a better problem to have
than "put it in drive but won't move".

Better meaning it might be fixable without
a transmission rebuild.

My thought . . . . not sure about the 42RLE
(which I have) but most traditional
transmissions have a parking "pawl" that
engages a notched wheel inside the transmission.
This is what stops the vehicle from moving when
in Park. When you say it keeps rolling, is it rolling
and still under power, or rolling like it's in neutral?
If it's rolling like it's in neutral, it could be a
broken pawl. That wouldn't explain why it sometimes
works though.

And secondly . . . . does the shift lever actually
go into Park? Could it be as simple as the cable
not moving far enough to engage park?
Does it go into reverse and neutral?

Not sure any of this helps, but something to
think about.

Plus . . . no one replied, but now someone will,
just to reply to my comments.

I appreciate the reply. It rolls like it’s in neutral, all other gears seem fine. It does catch from time to time. My hope is that it does have something to do with the cable. When I pulled the transmission pan everything looked clean, no chunks of metal anyway. I’ll update once I look at the shifter cable.
