Why you need to swap gears if going to bigger tires
I will update after I get the gears broke in but for now here are the results
Short story
I knew from past experience that swapping gears was beneficial on performance and also gas mileage
I have had OHV-KJs front diff ( with 4.10s already installed) sitting in my garage since he did his SFA, yes that long! I also had bought the rears knowing I was going to do 265-75s sooner or later.
I had talked to sprsonic ( another LOST and KJC member here in Toledo) about installing the rears but our schedules never seemed to be good for the both of us.
I installed 265-75-16 Goodyear Duratracs last November and right away loved the tires but hated the way the KJ drove. On two lane roads at 55 there was no way I could just run it in overdrive, you kicked back and forth so often that it was annoying to say the least. Only time overdrive could be used at all was to keep the speed at 75-77 at least. Then it was only turning in the 1900/2000 range.
Up here in the great Northwest part of Ohio it's flat so at the 75-77 range I could get 20-20.5 pretty easy even lifted and the 265-75s but get on two lanes and mileage dropped a bunch, the KJ was simply not running in its sweet spot.
This past Saturday, the stars aligned and sprsonic was able to install my gears for me, ( he even threw the front diff in as well since it was up on the rack) so yesterday I took it out to break in the gears and also see the difference in drivability. I put about 120 miles on with a mixture of interstate and two lane. Driving taking a break to let the gears cool down, drive again etc.
Before at 60 mph with the OD on I was at 1650-1680, with it off at 60 I was at 2475-2500
Now with the 4.10s with the OD on I am at 1950-2000, with it off at 2775-2800. Its now running in more of the sweet spot where the engine was designed to run.
With the OD on I can actually drive down the road at 55 or 60 and its not trying to find a gear to stay in, it drives like it did stock almost. ( Speedo is still off by 4 MPH , was 8 off )
Another benefit, cruising at 70 ( OD on) I used to see 20-20.5 average, now I am seeing 22 -22.5 on the same road. Back roads ( two lane) at 50-55 I was seeing a lot of 23-24 according to the scan gauge yesterday and that was with the OD on even, before it would of been 15-17.
I still want to break them in more before any long trips but so far its well worth the $$$
( or should say the money I have in mine)
NOTE: All RPMs and MPG's/speed taken from the Scan gauge and GPS before and after
So for anyone even thinking "I want to run a 32 inch tire do I need to swap gears" , the answer is "Heck yes!!!!!"

Thanks Tom. Just helped me make my mind up. Calling Eric @ ericautoparts later today. Last I spoke to him he had some 4.10s and master install kits available.

Hey Tom, do you plan on getting the computer setup with the right numbers or doing a ****** reset? Just wondering if that would help even more and what you would even do with the computer when you swap gears.

I have stock 3.73s and run 265/75s but driving across Florida going about 70 I only got 14mpg. and I dont even have an ARB. Any guesses why yours is much higher? Would plugs and fuel system cleaning make that much difference?

the 04 will get another 1-2 MPG more anyway - more towards 2. I think gears and getting your computer programmed for the tires is really all you can do.

Your KJ needs some TLC....................

Before the SFA swap and the last time I went to MOAB I ran 75-80mph,and the trip is not by any means flat as you do go from 6000' to well over 11,000',and with my KJ sitting over 5500lbs with 4.10's and 265/75 "D" range Trxus MT's I got just shy of 22mpg's.

Yes I'm going to run it for a while and get good hard numbers to work with, then I'll bug sprsonic some more to reset it as close as we can get it. 4 off now so shouldn't take much.

Just took it to lunch and I still grinning from ear to ear! :icon_twisted:

just from what I have seen so far I think it should be right in there on the average for sure. With what I have in everything it will pay me back in no time at all.

Hmmm, where might sprsonic reside that I can get him to input the numbers to mine and reset the ******?

Plugs may help some, not sure what tires you have etc, it all comes into play. I am kind of **** and swap plugs every 20,000 miles, rotate the tires every oil change ( 3000/3200 miles) check all fluid levels grease everything so some of that may help as well. Plus 3 inch tube to the grill for air, Amsoil air filter etc etc.
Plus I am sure my good looks help as well!:happy175::happy175::happy175::happy175:

Right here in the great ??? well Right here close to Toledo area.
Shoot him a PM, he's a great guy, I don't trust very many to even ride in my Jeep let alone work on it!
Well except he did lower mine on one side which I have to take care of tonight :whip::whip::whip:

yea i know that but even before his gear swap he was getting more. Guess I'll do plugs and fuel system and see what happens.

Tommudd has an '04. They get better mileage than the 02s and 03s. I had a stock 03 with the 45RFE and I got 16 MPG. I then got my current '04 and jumped to 18 MPG. I knew this beforehand and my findings proved it.

the fact that you get 14 MPG does not surprise me one bit.
