I don't know much about cars, but is there any way to have a conversion from 4X2 to 4X4 on a 02 Liberty limited?

I know people would say it might be cheaper to just trade in the vehicle for a 4X4 but this liberty i have, was once my brother's car and he died in afghanistan 3 years ago, he was in the US Army.

with that said, i am not getting rid of this vehicle but would like to know if i can make a conversion.
I will be moving to North Carolina soon and mother nature calls over there ;)

oh and by the way this would be my first post but long time reader, Great website guys.

Or buy a 4x4 liberty, make a trail rig out of it, and keep the 4x2 for road trips.

So sorry to hear about your brother dude, I couldnt imagine.

With that, a donor kj would be the best thing to get. If you could find one that had been in a bad rear end, or front end for the matter(if the axle is ok), it would probably be best.

You need a out-put for the ****** so the tcase can bolt up, tcase, rear Drive shaft, front driveshaft, and front diff with CV's. The bearings and knuckles are the same on a 4x2 and 4x4 so you can keep those.

You will also need the linkage+handle for the tcase and such.

Im not to sure how you would hook up the sensor that lights up on the dash and says its in 4x4 and such. I also dont know how you would wire the handle up that lets the computer know its in 4low. Im not even sure if a liberty thats 4x2 would be programmed for 4low. It re-tunes the engine to give maximum torque at low rpms and dis-ables the air bags.

Again, if you can find a cheap wrecked liberty that had a decent drive-train you can just swap it all over. Tjkj said this method is to much $$ but since you really want to and such.

Where are you moving in NC? I live very close to the mountains of western NC, and have only needed 4wd (because of snow) twice. It has come in handy when wheelin though. It can be done, but it isn't going to be easy, or cheap.

Thank you all guys for your replies, as many of you said already, i guess my best bet would be to find a Donor liberty, i've seen a few on ebay.

it seems like a long process but i really don't mind, I am moving to Mt. Pleasant NC, about an hour from Charlotte, my girlfriend and i like adventures and every once in a while we take off to Blue Ridge Pkwy and the surroundings, but i would really like to step up a little and go wheeling ;)

Love the blue ridge!

Yea, 4low dis-ables the air bags on all 4x4 Jeeps tony. I would think that over-seas libertys have that also.

It would suck to be offroad and hit a big mud-hole only to be smacked in the face with an air bag. Ask tjkj about it, hes tested it out.

4lo disables the airbag? I don't think my KJ is that smart....I do not even have ABS..all I have is auto throttle...but that's big fun. Got out of the car once while it was climbing up a hill, you should have seen my wife's face....aha, so that's why she doesn't want to go wheelin anymore...oh well.

Holy crap, they make KJs with auto-throttle? I didn't know about that...
