First off, I am new to the forum. I joined up to get some insight with my wife's Liberty. It is a 2002 4wd Limited V6 with an auto trans and around 60k on her. It is in the shop today for brakes, and I had them inspect some other issues I have noticed. I tried searching these topics, but nothing directly associated with them. Here is the list of problems.

1.) Trans extension housing seal
2.) Ground noise/Squeal coming from the speakers while taking off.

I replaced the original battery last month due to a crack around the terminal. The terminal was badly corroded, so the new battery was a must. Now the corrosion is back, and the squeal is still there. Any experience with this? I am thinking a bad chassis ground or possible alternator.

The trans seal, and tip/tricks for this one? I ordered the seal, and will replace it when it arrives, but would like a heads up incase there are any hidden gremlins to deal with.

Hard to explain. Have you ever hooked up an aftermarket stereo with a bad ground, or a CB, etc.? You will sometimes hear a whistle/squeal noise through the speaker/s with the engine running, and the pitch changes with the RPMs, even while sitting still. It is definately coming through the speakers, but the dealer wants $500 for a new alternator  so if it is the alternator, that will be purchased from a local parts store.

My guess is that if the battery is corroding again and the whine is for sure coming from the speakers, there is a ground somewhere that is not as well grounded as it should be. Thats my guess.

Mine too. Double check all your grounds and clean where and when necessary.

Ok, got the battery issue straight for right now, I will have to watch it. I did replace the alternator. Now, another question spawning from the trans seal one. The service tech told me that seal was bad, but come to find out after crawling under the Liberty today, I see it is coming from the 231. Seems to be bleeding around the center of the case, the output shaft is dry, but the case is covered in fluid, and the skid is soaked. I know a little fluid goes a long way, but are there any other seal/gasket issues with the 231's? I would like to get some more insight if possible.

From your describtion it sounds like the split seal is leaking on the t-case,there is no gasket just RTV or aircraft grade RTV(very expensive but very good stuff). To fix it you need to remove(drain first) the t-case and unbolt the 2 halves of the t-case,it works best to put the t-case in a 5 gallon bucket(with the ****** input in the bucket),very carefully lift the back half of the t-case off, clean the 2 surfaces really good and reapply a new bead of good RTV(ultra gray or ultra copper) and then bolt the 2 halves back together, reinstall, fill, and go for a road test. This is not a faint of heart job, there is alot of needle bearings that can fall out and go bye-bye,but it relitively easy as far as major jobs.

My wife will love me for this one :D Thank you for the advice. I am going to clean it off this weekend to try and pin point the leak. It looked like it is at the retainer, but once clean it should be easier to tell. I will let you guys know what I find out. Posting a picture of where I think it is coming from, where the retainer (Arrow number 2) meets the t-case.

If leaking from there it's way to easy, just remove rear driveshaft(drain t-case first!),unbolt that rear cover, clean surfaces, and reseal with some good RTV and reverse for install. You don't need to remove the t-case from the KJ for that one!

I am keeping my fingers crossed. I will not even think about my normal luck though sad2.gif Before I forget, which RTV to buy?

Ok, split the case, sealed the halfs, sealed the retainer/output shaft housing, and now I have to wait for my dealer to get me a new output seal. The good news is the leaks seem to be gone, and the old seal will hold for a few days. Thanks to all for the input and help. Also, I was surprised at how little the transfer case takes to fill with fluid.
