A quick question for you regarding your KJ upon completion of your SFA retrofit.

Are you also going to install a hydraulic rear steering set-up for your rig?
(Either electro-hydraulic or a unit operated by an auxiliary power steering pump.) (cool)

Cheers

I think front and rear steering would kick a33 on the trail. Especially if you could control weather the rear wheels turn opposite or in sync with the front wheels.

OK, back to topic...

If you think we are bad at going off topic you should check out PNWJeep.com. They can't have one thread that dosen't go waaaaaaay off topic.

Oh heck no, we don't get nowhere near some other forums I've seen. Over on the AZVJC forum most every topic goes off on a tangent sooner or later, and half of them turn into complete drama sessions.

Mostly I was telling myself to get back to topic ;)

tjkj.....Didn't GM have some 4 wheel steering option on some p/u trucks at one point?? Quadra-steer or something? Not sure if that was what it was called. They must have had a really good turning radius for a p/u truck. Why wouldn't that work good off road in a tight spot?

They did (don't know if they still do) but IIRC it only engages at low speed (less than 5 or 10mph). The one I recall also had a limited range of turn, it was mostly good for helping to parallel park the big beasties. Still might be useful offroad if your trying to get thru a particularly tight spot...

Yes they did but it was a weaker rear axle and they where plagued with problems and yanked the option after 2-3 years since the electronics couldn't keep the rear wheels strait at highway speeds.

Some GM trucks did. Also, Honda Preludes came with a 4WS option back in the early 90's.

Honda's, Early Subaru's, Mazda 323 sport turbo with all wheel steering, and as mentioned some models of GMC Pick-up trucks.

The import "Tuner" cars were designed to make the vehicle handle even better while on track duty.
The GMC's were more for ease of access and off road assistance while driving.

I've seen some really simple and relatively inexpensive "Rear wheel steer" kits for off road usage advertised in various truck and 4X4 magazines.
One kit retailed for something like $500.00 all in and was an independent electrical unit with built in pump and reservoir as one unit that you install up and out of the way so that those components don't get ripped off whilst on the trail or on the rocks! The ram, stainless steel over braid / Teflon hoses were I believe Aero-Quip or Russel and had additional rubber lined "P" clips and assorted related components supplied.
The only item the end user was to supply was a "Steerable" rear axle. Or the customer could buy an additional kit to convert their stock rear axle in to a unit which is steerable.

I think that they would be very useful and worth while to have on board.

But I'll be damned... Now I cannot find the link on my computer that shows off the kit!

I'll keep looking though!

Cheers

The only good way I have seen a rear steer set-up is to use 2 front 2 1/2 ton Rockwell axles and run a full hydro steering set-up,front and rear. The 2 1/2 ton Rockwells are the only axles I would consider for a 4 wheel steer vehicle since they are pretty beefy axles and pretty common to find and mod.Granted you need at least 44" tires on 20" rims since the only gear ratio to be had for them is 6.72:1,but at least you can get a Detriot locker for them:D.

HHHMMMMM................................

Maybe some Rockwells and the new 54" Interco Boggers is in order for my KJ:D.

Think they will fit?

Hell, anything will fit. Just depends on how bad you really want something!
I saw some dude toolin' around an industrial complex with an ATV that was surely 7 feet tall had 38 inch mud tyres (make and model unknown to me)and it had 4 wheel steering on it! Just awesome.
It even had a remotely operated hydraulically opened beer cooler on board! (beer)
Damn thing was more capable of a four wheel drive than most of the 4X4's parked on their lot!

The only thing missing was an automated spliff roller! :D

(Cheers)
