I have a 2002 Renegade with an apparently broken stock radio/cd player. I'd been considering purchasing an aftermarket head unit regardless, but this just encouraged me to do so sooner. I bought a used Pioneer DEH-P4000UB head unit, with wiring harness.

As far as dash kits go, I ordered what I thought was a complete installation kit, however, it turned out the seller only sent me a single piece. Now though, every site I find seems to stress that this is the only piece I need. Is this true? It seems like there should be other pieces with it.

Dash Kit(?):

Also, the head unit came with its own wiring harness, however, I was told I would need another one if I didn't want to have to splice the wires together. What is the best harness to purchase? I found two: Metra 70-1817 and Metra 70-6502. Will either of these work with the new head unit, or is one better than the other?

The wiring harness it came with:

The stereo you got likely came with a metal sleeve. That sleeve goes into the bezel you got, and you push tangs on it to hold it securely in place. That then screws into your vehicle w/ 4 screws & stereo slides in and locks into place. As for which harness to get, as long as its compatible, chances are you'll be fine. Basically you have to put the 2 harnesses together matching wires color for color either by soldering/heat shrink (preferred) or some other means wire ties, blue 3m connectors, etc (not as preferred). Then you simply connect up one end to the jeep, one to the head unit, and you're set to go.

Thanks! I believe the head unit does have a sleeve on it, and it also came with a couple metal pieces that look like they're made to hold it in place. Hopefully the pictures below will clear those questions up.

Is this the sleeve?

And these are the metal pieces I spoke of:

Yea, thats the sleeve.

Pretty sure those two metal pieces are so you can take the sleeve back off since it pops into place once you slide it on. Thats what I used them for at least.

And yes, that sleeve slides into that plastic piece then you bend some metal tabs over on the sleeve to hold it in the plastic piece.

Thats the wiring harness I used. It plugged into the Jeeps wiring harness then you splice all the wires onto the head units wiring harness. Im sure there are other wiring harnesses out there but I didnt look for them.

Make sure you hook that 'system remote control' up. I didnt at first but it turned out that it turns on the infinity amps(if you have them).

I did need an antenna adapter.

And those metal clips come in handy later on when you dont want to tear your whole dash off to get behind your stereo. There is a flimsey plastic rectangular 'frame' around the face of your deck. when that is very carefully removed you can slip those 'keys' (not an actual key, but what i've always heard them called) in it will allow your stereo to be removed very quickly.

I had to get behind mine shortly after bestbuy installed it to install my amp. was able to run all the wires coming from the stereo to the cargo area in less than half an hour.

I got everything I needed at Wal*Mart:

Wire Harness, Antenna Adapter, and Install Kit. Only took a total of about an hour, that's but-splicing the wires from the radio to the harness; placing the radio in the bezel, then hooking it all up... Was so damn easy... One of the easiest installs I have ever done.
