It's kind of a light thumping rotating type noise. Seems to be set off by a bump or something in the road. Then can be stopped by hitting the brakes, lightly, not a lot of braking is required, no shaking in the steering wheel. No vibrations. Not death wobble.

Sorry, seems like the front.
Have had both c.v. shafts replaced in the last year (used the Napa remans) unfortunately when I picked up the jeep from having those replaced they decided not to do the intermediate shaft because it looked fine, even though I had supplied the new part...
Also replaced the c.v. on the front driveshaft...don't remember which end

I could see the intermediate shaft causing that noise. When mine was bad I used to get a light thumping rotational noise at very specific speeds on the highway- like at 66, 72 etc. For a year or two I thought it was a tire balancing issue. Sounded/felt quite similar.

Also used to have nasty clunk from the front when it was bad, but it wouldn't make the rotational noise after hitting a bump.

It's normal to have a little amount of play, but if you move it around it shouldn't move enough to make any noise.

Yeah that's too much. That's about where mine was when I replaced it.

Yes intermediate shaft is toast
Better replace the CV again as well since it will have the splines worn on it as well . That way you'll be good for quite some time

*sigh* I knew I should have made the shop that did the front cv shafts install the intermediate too, they didnt when doing the other shafts because they said it was a "non wear item" ug

Now, how do I convince my wife I also need the jba upper arms, top plates, and more rear iso spacers while I'm doing this...hmmm

Here is a video of me moving the passenger cv where it connects to the intermediate shaft. I think that's too much play...what do you think.

uh-oh, mine has almost that much movement too and makes a little clicking noise when i move it. :icon_eek:

Cant detect any additional noise when driving but with the mud tires its pretty loud anyway. I also had the CV replaced about 7000 miles ago and the shop told me that the intermediate shaft looked fine.

so if changing a CV replace the intermediate shaft too?

NOT SURE ABOUT OTHERS
BUT Most every one I have seen is
A) rusted to the CV so bad they come out together and need replacing due to the rust , splines rusted/ pitted
or
B) splines on both the Intermediate shaft and the CV are worn enough that if you replace one the other will be gone in short order
So I have always replaced both and then you are sure
Cheap insurance in my book

lol last time i replaced my intermediate, i handed the napa boys my intermediate core and a passenger cv at the same time cause i strapped it up and put about 15 tons on it and hit it with a sledge about 30 times and that sucka mule wouldnt separate lol

but hey.. atleast the intermediate tends to do its wear and or "damage" on the cv end.
