I was leaving the gym and got into my Jeep to head home. Once I started it, there was absolutely no A/C. It didn't matter which setting I had it on and I tried switching from heating to cooling with no success. When I started it, it was on the high recirculation setting. However, I restarted the Jeep and it worked perfectly. What would possibly cause that?

broken ac? =D

hehheh ok seriously, this is all a guess use model at ur own risk. dial is connected to computer, computer decides what to do based on dial position, position was lost by computer, reset computer, thus computer finds position again. if u run defrost ,ode it auto runs ac, regardless of if u have ac button on, so there must be logic in the system, not really sure tho. my sunroof module on my vw did weird stuff like that.

Computer glitch is a sound idea. Grounding is a huge issue with most electrical problems. Moisture and/or humidity can play a role in how an electrical system works. Compressors are electro-mechanical and are fused. If it happens again, here are some things to check:

1)all electrical connections to your compressor and controls
2)proper "charge" of your R-134 (freon)
3)poly belt tension
4)proper steering fluid quantity (some systems have switches to prevent running A/C compressor in case of belt failure or steering pump seizure. Could be the switch. Had one fail on a GM once)

Electrons are silly little creatures often confused with Gremlins. Some probably left over from AMC.

Well, the A/C went out completely on me at lunch. It's at the dealer now and is going to cost $370 to repair. The blower motor and the blower resistor went bad.

$5 says that it was just the resistor and they want to replace the motor to make more money.

With that said... at least you might get the new unit that all the '06 people are getting, lol

^I agree.. What is that, an $18 part? Why would both the motor and the resistor pack go bad at the same time?

Because it's a Jeep and they like to fry random parts for no apparent reason it seems....

Good news is my window regulator fixed itself on my way to the dealer though...

For now. It is playing with you like the A/C unit, then you'll have to make a 2nd trip to the dealer and have them up charge you like they will be doing for the A/C resister / motor.

LOL. Sadly, I know that's true.

As for the parts, I'm just saying that I don't have any reason to think they are lying this time because we have done quite a bit of business with them and they have saved us good amounts of money in the past by saying "we could replace this, but honestly it's just a $20 sensor that needs fixed". So, I'm not going to go accusing them of screwing me over when they have obviously intended not to multiple times in the past.

That BITES. Sorry to hear about losing your air. When I was younger, we didn't run it just to save a little fuel. At temps over 100, I can't imagine NOT having it now.

I could think of worse things to happen and it's not like I'll die driving it with no A/C, so I won't complain too much. It's fixed now though and I'm taking a small trip tonight to test it out now.

yikes! Another reason why I have a FSM and do my own work

With that said, you said that you started the engine with the a/c on recirc and the blower on high? I've always been told not to start the engine with the a/c on (much less on high). Puts a big strain on the engine when you first crank it up. I've always made it a habit to turn the blower as low as it will go, and make sure the a/c is off when I shut down the engine (i'll usually flip it off when i'm finding a parking space, or backing in the driveway...etc etc....so it has plenty of time to cut off). Then once the engine has been running for a few seconds (maybe 5-10 seconds) i'll flip it on after a restart.

Always used this method and never had a problem with the a/c in a vehicle.

I never use the A/C unless Ive been working all day and Im tired. I never turn the Jeep off with the A/C on either. I turn it off and try to give the evap time to drain.

Ya know, I had always been careful about that, but then I heard it was a wive's tale that doesnt really apply anymore. However, after this happened, I think I'm going to go back to my old ways....
