It looks like it's just to transfer power to the dead battery, it's not designed to "jump" the dead vehicle.

It'd work if the dead battery isn't completely drained, but I'm pretty sure it'd take longer then "5-10 minutes"

That is why I wouldn't spend my money on one of those. The current that can go through the cig socket is very little compared to 8awg jumper cables. Plus if you blow the fuse in the cig lighter you will need real jumper cables.

It is a good idea in theory but I imagine practical use for people who know not to cross positive and negative is just not there.

Jumper cables are the most efficient way, the next way is a large jumper kit with a lead-acid battery that hooks directly to your battery.

I have a small jump start battery device that hooks through your cigarette lighter (got it as a gift) and it worked once in an emergency, failed a second time.

Bottom line, get real jumper cables if you have another car available. For real emergencies, I strongly recommend one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Cobra-CJIC-350-Jumpstarter-Powerpack/dp/B002HQYXNK/ref=sr_1_4?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1274816435&sr=1-4

Not necessarily that brand, but something like it. It's a true jump starter that clamps to the battery terminals, and has enough juice to do it right the first time. Most importantly, they give you independence. Even if you have jumper cables, you have to have another driver somewhere near by to pull up to you-- and close enough for the cables to work. These are basically the units that AAA carry with them for times when your car is parked in a way that they can't run cables to you.

Ya...lol i thought it was b/s when i saw it!

It's not so much that it's BS, it just might now work when you need it- or if your battery is severely drained.

Like I said, I have a small jump starter unit with a battery in it that plugs into the cigarette lighter. I needed it twice. The first time my battery was pretty severely drained and it failed me. The second time was in my driveway, so I walked into the house, charged the unit up for an hour, then took it outside and used it and it worked. So I sereiously doubt it would have worked had it been sitting in my car for three months and I'd tried to use it cold.
