I know this is a Jeep forum but my friend is in desperate help:

My friend recently installed a brand new aftermarket sony radio unit in his 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, and here's what happened:

1st, he cut off the existing harness so we had to wire from scratch into the old wiring that was there, I got a wiring diagram from here and it worked perfect, however the radio didn't come on and there was some wires left.

2nd, on further examination he discovered the fuses in the panel were blown so he replaced all of those and the radio came on, now here's where in the problem lies. The RPMS on his vehicle since putting this radio in have dropped from 1100RPMS to 800RPMS.. is this normal?

3rd, should he just do what I told him disconnect the battery for a little while and reconnect it, and see what happens because he installed this thing without disconnecting the battery.

Umm, no, the rpm's of the engine should not drop since he installed a radio. Those are two totally different things. The engine doesnt rev up when he turns the volume up does it? (rotflmao)

Define what you mean by 'dropped from 1100 rpms to 800rpms? Is this at idle? Around 800 rpm's is normal for idle.

Always unhook the battery when playing with electrical stuff.

Make sure that everything is wired properly.

1) Get the radio's installation manual if you don't have it from the mfg's website.
2) Go to the12volt.com and get the wiring schematic for the truck.

Make sure everything matches. Nothing in what you wrote sounds normal - I think the install was not completed correctly.

Okay to answer everyone's questions here and btw thanks for responding:

1st Atrus: We did get a diagram for his explorer directly from an explorer website, I know man that it doesn't sound right personally I don't care if it's right because he installed it not me had the ******* not cut the damn harness like I told him not to then he could have just plugged and played but no..this idiot made everything complicated, So what would you say it is because we did get the correct wiring diagram.

2nd: JeepJeepster: on his explorer normal idle was 1100 rpms now when he starts it, it idles at 800 rpms since installing this stereo, and yes I know unhook the battery I told him that but he didn't listen to anything I said see above ^^

3rd: Mag03KJ: man I began to wonder that myself but if it was ground the stereo wouldn't work correct? I mean he did have to replace all the fuses in his fuse panel..

blown fuses make me feel that there is a short sumwhere......if its a significant one, it could lower tha idle diue to the extra load on the alternator.

seeems like the fuses would blow again tho......

This is an extremely irrelevant and awkward response.

Ive never seen an engine idle at 1100rpms. Ive never seen an engine idle above 1000rpms for what its worth.

The blown fuses most likely came from the fact that he just started cutting wires with power on them. One of the wires probably got grounded and blew the fuse.

If its wired correctly now then it sounds fine. If the engine was idling at 1100 rpms then something was wrong with it before.... And it wasnt the radio.

I uhh, yeah, ok, so 'idle' dropped to 800 rpms. To me that seems about normal. 1100 is where it would be idling before it was warmed up. But maybe the Explorer is different? I think every car I've ever owned idled below 1000rpms. I'm inclined to think that he's confrused, is comparing his cold-idle to his warm-idle and is convincing himself something 'changed'.

Where I live you have to have your emissions tested. If you can't get your vehicle idle below 1000 for the test, you're rejected and you have to go get your car "fixed".
