Has anyone ever had problems with their automatic transmission being hard to shift into 1st (low gear)?

I'm up in Ouray, CO doing some wheeling and this afternoon I started having trouble. My shifter wants to bind up when I try to put it in low gear in either 2wd or 4wd. I'm talking about the auto shifter, not the 4wd hi-lo shifter.

I've taken some hits on my skid plates while out on the trail the last few days, but nothing appears to be bent and I haven't done any really high water crossings (no higher than the center of my wheels), so I don't think water is an issue.

I guess when I get home, I'm heading straight for the .25 cent car wash to clean all the dirt etc off the underside, take it to the dealer and deny I have been off road for awhile.

Thanks for any inputs....

May have packed alot of mud up around the shifter on the ****** messing up the shifter cable or something hit up there and threw the shifter cable out of adjustment.

^^what he said. If its shifting fine on it own this its probably just a problem with shifter cable.

Another reason why I stay outta the mud.. It always screws stuff up..

Thanks for the comments... the shifter is working fine this morning, no binding at all. And yes, it shifted okay on it's on when it was binding up. I'll still get it checked out when we get home....

Update... I got the wife's KJ back from the dealer yesterday. They found the shifter assembly was jamming. They replaced the shifter and shift interlock cable under warranty.

Thanks Alan (Earnhardt's Chrysler/Jeep in Tempe, AZ), for the help in getting the issue fixed on the first try.

Case closed.... :)
