axle play

07 liberty. I recently noticed my front diff is a bit noisy. I checked the fluid and level and color looks good. I did notice that if i grabbed the left cv axle were it goes into the diff, it has play. (Side to side and up and down) its definetely not from a cv joint its the whole thing. Would it be the axle shaft bearing or would it be the inner side diff bearing? Im hoping its the shaft bearing as they are cheap. Any thoughts?

A little play is normal at that spot. Hows your front drive shaft? (tcase end) I would check there first even if it sounds like the front.

I will check tomorrow. The left side has play but the right has next to nothing. Figured i should check as i am gonna be doing lower ball joints, quick struts and clevis bushings soon. The clunking of dead struts is driving me nuts plus the wandering is also annoying.

Yup you called it. The cv on the driveshaft is the noise. Well i guess 500 bucks is going in the jeep.

You can replace just the cv for allot less$. There is a thread in here that details the procedure, if i can find it...

If it bothers you .. or is at the point of catastrophic failure... just remove it (driveshaft) until your new parts arrive.
