Anyone know what the brake rotor tolerances are for a 2005 Liberty 4x4?

I brought the car in for an inspection, and the guy calls me saying I need all 4 rotors and brakes. He says metal on metal (which I doubt since I hear no squeal noises)..... could be scammin me. I gott ago run down there now and look myself.

In 2 weeks I get a 2008 delivered, so I do not want to put money in this 2005 just to return it to Jeep.

Probably is scamming you with the brake rotors!
But if you are trading it in from a lease return then are you not responsible to keep the vehicles service, and maintenance up to par?
If it is just a trade in to-wards purchasing a new vehicle, the dealership will ding you trade-in value wise for all the things they find wrong!

We actually "own" the 2005.... it was bought with the Jeep "Smart Buy".... low payments for 3 yrs and then a balloon payment at the end. Or you turn it in, sorta like a lease.

Anyway, I went on down to Pep Boys where they are doing the inspection. The pads are NOT "metal on metal". but they are very VERY low. Maybe an 1/8 of an inch of pad. The manager showed me, but the mechanic went home so I do not know how thick the rotors are. I did find online (autozone.com) the rotar tolerances..... 1.024 inch for fronts and 0.433" for rears. That value for rear rotars seems kinda thin, right?

I am not sure what the "retuirn rules" are for the brakes condition.... my DW cannot find her purchase papers.

I'll find out exactly what my rotor's thickness is in the morning when the mechanic gets back in ..... the manager said they they won't pass inspection and neither will the pads.

At the least, I'll be replacing the pads. They want $159 per axel to replace pads. Rotars are $36 each plus labor. If I do it myself I save a bundle. Just not the time of year I'd like to be replacing brakes. Too cold.

Yep, up here in the big city they wanna make sure your car is safe and can stop. This way you don't kill anyone else or yerself.

They also check you ball joints and suspension for excess wear. And tire tread depth.

Think about the reverse situation..... do you really want some bumblehead driving around with no brakes, worn tires not being able to stop and he hits your wife/kid/grandmother?

Well, the night manager was lying. The car was NOT going to fail inspection. The next morning I talked to the main service manager. He said it was only "recommended" that I have all 4 rotors and pads replaced since they were so close to metal on metal contact.

Since the front pads cost the same whether I change them or they change them and labor was only $78, and it was raining and cold , and we had a house full of guests .... I had them change the front pads only. The front pads were maybe a sixteenth of an inch remaining. Didn't want any problems if they touched metal to metal the day the car gets turned in. Plus it's a safety issue...... my wife and kid ride in there. And myself.

Strange part is there are no metal tabs that squeal when the original issue pads get low.

No rotors replaced since they were just within specs before being failed.
