04 liberty when I try to open the window/hatch with the handle on the back it does not open, but if I use the keyless entry the glass works fine. I opened the access door on the inside of my back door and when I pull the lever I can feel it moving, but the door doesn't open. Does anyone have any ideas? I need to get it open as I have pavers and mulch in there and it is a pain to reach through the glass

The only time I had this happen was when I got a surf leash caught in that lock mechanism. It was really jammed. I ended up using brute force and the door popped open. Maybe something is restricting the lock like this?

My 07 glass is goofy too. The glass only opens with the key fob. When I unlock and open the swing gate, the glass is supposed to unlatch and pop open....it will open but will not shut, I have to hit the button on the key fob to release the latch so it will close. I figured it's a couple hundred doller fix so I just deal with it. It is a PITA.

So yours is an 04. Doesn't it unlock and the glass open with the key fob? Try unlocking the doors/rear tailgate with the button on the drivers or passenger door and then see if the tailgate and glass will open when you pull the tailgate handle. Otherwise it sounds like the lock is sticking? When you get it open try lubing it good?

Try unlocking the doors/rear tailgate with the button on the drivers or passenger door and then see if the tailgate and glass will open when you pull the tailgate handle.

It locks with all the other doors in the Jeep and must be unlocked like all the others as well. So as suggested above, we must first know if you are indeed unlocking all the doors before you try to open it. The fob button will override the lock, but the gate handle will not.

I had this problem...ended up being the latch mechanism dirty with old grease and dirt so the mechanism wasnt returning properly. Clean it up real good and add a little fresh lube.

I love how I don't think of the simple solution, just assume the worst....I'm going to take a look later today when or if it quits raining out.

x3 on this. Mine was doing this just a few weeks ago, did the above procedure and it works great again.

This doesn't help the OPs problem with the mechnical parts of the handle not opening but....

the glass not poping open issue is a small switch inside next to the handle. Its a 16 dollar part and looks like this.

Harness is top next to handle.

To get the cover off initially, Pull the grey plastic cover off from the bottom first and work your way up the sides. There are some tabs at the top you will need to lift over at the end and when you mount it again.

The internal bits of this swtich is what kept randomly shorting. Again 16 - 22 dollars at the dealer. FYI i tried lubing it with oil to keep the shorting to only the electrical contacts but I ultimately disconnected it till i got the part as it kept randomly poping the glass when the circuit would close.

ok so i had this same problem so i ripped out the wire intending to get a new one(never happened) but now about a year later the gate wont open at all. it's stuck shut! the mechanism seems to be working fine. though the lock motor sounds like it's just about dead. does anyone know how to release the door? i've got it all pulled apart and can't see any manual release for the lock. i am very close to using brute force but i'd rather not if i don't have to.
