How do you change the power steering fluid on a 2002? I read that you have to get a turkey baster and suck out all fluid!?? I plan on putting in the Valvoline Synthetic ATF+4 after I take all the old fluid out.

It's a 2002 and I think it has the stock fluid in there because it look really old and dark. It has 71K on the clock and I think i should have changed it a couple of times already!

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
...bump!! :D Any comments? Is there a drain plug on the PS reservoir or pump? Should I put ATF+4?
Ther is no drain plug, just suck as much out with a bastor as possible, then refill, start KJ and turn the steering wheel back and forth for a few minuates, turn off and repeat for 1 qt or 2 of fluild. This will replace most of the old fluild with new,I'm not sure about using ATF+4 as PS fliuld I use Valvolines synthetic PS fliud in mine.

I read over at the LOST board that the KJ uses ATF+4 fluid after 2003 and the 2002 should be replaced the Mopar PS Fluid with Mopar ATF+4 Fluid. Is this not true?

In my 2002 manual it says "Mopar Power Steering Fluid". Anyone know if I should use regular PS fluid or ATF+4?

I would go with whatever your manual suggests. Who's to say they didn't change something in the power steering between years.

I topped mine off with Mopar Power Steering fluid. Its been leaking since I got the Jeep new..

Ill probably change it out at 30k.. I may also put a power steering cooler on at that time.

Now that I think about it, I've had to top mine off before. Heard the pump being louder than normal one morning as I pulled out of the garage. I popped the hood and opened it up with the engine running only to see was hardly any fluid in there at all!

I ran up to Napa and grabbed a bottle of their brand of regular power steering fluid and put it in. No problems since. I will however check it again this weekend if I can remember.

So instead of getting the Mopar brand (probably really expensive at the dealer), could I use Valvoline, like tjkj2002 said? How many quarts do I need?

yes, I believe it was around $5 a quart.. I didnt care to pay that for the one quart, but I didnt want to take a chance..

It would probably be fine to use Valvoline like tjkj2002 said..
