Alright, I picked up a set of these http://www.totalmobileaudio.com/products_components.php?speaker_id=431 BNIB for $50 and I plan on installing them in to my 2005 Liberty. As far as I can tell I do not have the premium speakers. I plan on doing a simple install with out drilling any holes (other than speaker mounting holes). I want the tweeter some where on the door near the handle. The crossovers will go in the pocket on the door. I want to use existing speaker wiring and not to have to run new wires through the door. From what I've read there are like 10 wires on the plug that goes to the speaker. Which wires are for what? I can't seem to find a wiring diagram that corresponds to the non premium system.

Thanks

If it is non premium, I don't see why there would be 10 wires on the plug on each side. All you need is the feed from H/U to speakers, so I would get a volt meter or use the speakers to splice into the cables, you will have to cut the connector anyway, and see which one is Left F, Left R, and on the pass side, which one is Right F and Right R.
I assume you are keeping rear speakers stuck, by passing the x-overs. So you just patch them through, done.

Got an amp?

Sounds easy enough. Yes I am keeping the stock rear speakers. The rears are hooked up to my deck (eclipse cd5030) and the fronts are hooked up to a 300 watt Rockford fosgate amp. The amp connects to the speaker wires on the radio wiring harness.

I do have the 6 speaker system. Are the dash speakers connected seperately to the crossover or are they on the same wires as the door speaker? I don't want the dash speakers operational.

I guess you are one of the rare 6 speaker non-premium owners.

The dash tweeters are fed by front door speakers in premium setup, I would assume it is the same with non-premium, hence having 10 wires on your plug @ front speakers. There is a small filter between dash and front speakers, filtering lows, basically it is another speaker.

When you said rears are hooked up to your deck, fronts are hooked up to amp, amp back to speaker wires...etc.. you mean that's your plan? Or you actually have this in place with stock speakers?

Currently I have the rears hooked up to the deck and the stock fronts hooked up to my amp.

You're saying most non premium set ups don't have 6 speakers? I'm not 100% sure if I have premium or not. I did have the 6 disc in dash deck. Infinity wasn't written any where on that.

Infinity is not written anywhere on any premium setup, it is only indicated on build list or you can see the big amps attached to front door speakers. Did you buy your jeep used? Why would you have 300W amp powering stock paper cone speakers?

Well, I was referring to "visible" sections, so was he I believe. If you ever drove grand cherokee with premium setup, they actually had infinity badge right on the speaker grilles on the doors.

Yeah I bought the jeep used. I really don't think I have the "premium" system because when the system was all stock it didn't sound good at all...No bass what so ever. I guess the best way to find out what I really have is to pull off the door panel, pull the speaker and look.

I have the stock speakers on the amp because I had the amp from a previous install and I wanted better sound until I got new components. There was a noticable difference in sq when I put the fronts on a dedicated amp rather than using deck power.

You got it all ready, and all you have to do is swap the speakers and splice the wires to hook up new speakers. Those speakers you linked are 6.5, you will need adapter rings as openings are 6 3/4". Out of those 10 you will need only two. And remember to patch the wires that feed the rear speakers, if you cut and leave them off, you will not have sound on rear doors.

Keep us posted.

Ok pulled the door panel off and discovered I do not have the premium system. There are only 2 wires on the door speaker and no amp/crossover attached. Apparently I don't need an adapter. My new speaker fits perfectly in the hole other than the speaker being too deep and hits the window. Good thing I have a half inch spacer ring. I'll finish the rest another day. I have to get some sheet metal screws so I can mount the spacer ring to the door.

One other thing. It looks like I'll have to take out the dash speakers so I can unhook them. I can't find a deep 7/32 socket at any stores here so I can take the grab handles off. I think the factory door speaker is 2 ohms. That means the dash speaker is 2 ohms and connected in series to the door speaker. Think it will be ok to leave the dash speaker connected?

the dash tweeters are 8 ohm and have crossovers attached to them.

yu can leave them hooked up. yu will only have an impedance differance at around 8khz. slight at that.....so yu may or may not notice that yure highs may seem a little bright.

With the new tweeters on the door, that will be a bit too much highs going inside the cabin. If there was only a pair of wires for the door speakers, are rears and the dash speakers wired directly from the head unit? If you end up finding a deep socket, why don't you just place the new tweeters in the dash?

It looks like the rears go directly to the deck. The front speaker wires in the doors match the wires behind the deck. I'm guessing the dash speakers are tapped in to those wires in parallel. It looks like I'll have to unhook the existing dash speaker anyway. The new speakers are 4 ohm and the existing dash are 8 ohm. If those are in fact connected in parallel then that will be 2.67ohm load on my amp. I can't drop my amp below 4 ohm. It's a 4 channel amp. I want the front channel bridged for the left and the rear channel bridged for the right. That'll give me 200 watts x 2.

Placing the tweeters in the dash is a good idea. I saw in another thread that someone used plumbers strap to secure the tweeter. I may just have to copy that idea. Off to sears I go to find a deep socket.

Yeah, while you are at it, you might as well replace the dash, you can just snip the tweeters wires and run new ones to it. This way you don't need to put the crossovers inside the doors.

Well, I managed to find a deep socket. On sale for $2 something at sears. It looks like the project will be delayed for a while. One my way back from getting the deep socket I hit some black ice on the freeway. I ended up going sideways in to the ditch and my spare tire/bumper catching a street lamp and knocking the lamp over. I'll find out Tuesday if the vehicle if repairable or not. Talk about a lovely start to a new year

Maybe it won't be as bad as you may think for damages though.
