Confused about tire mount on an 02 KJ

The spare tire mount on my Fiancee's 02KJ is held on by the same chrome Lug nuts that are used on the axles. I'm a little confused by this b/c on my 06 the tire mount is held on by regular black nuts. Is this normal for that year or did someone change how the mount held on?

She bought it used and as you probably noticed on the forum I've been asking about many different things b/c of her KJ. Everyday I find something out of place on the damn thing lol

The last owner probably put those on.
All KJ's that I look at have "Black" hardware as per stock!

Those fancy chrome looking lugnuts that are holding the tire carrier on are not real lugnuts,they are identical to the black nuts holding your carrier on but with a chrome cap to look like a lugnut.

My '04 had the chrome capped lug nuts holding the spare tire on, the same as on the axles.

Thanks, that's good to know. Some of the Real lugs on her KJ look like crap and I was gonna use the ones holding the mount on to swap them out. I can scratch that idea now. I'll just by some new ones.

I'm not talking about the lugs that hold on the tire. I'm talking about the (know i know what they are) bolts that are chrome cap holding the spare mount to the the door.

My '02 Limited has the 3 chromed lug nuts too holding the spare mount to the door along with 2 for the spare plus the "locking" lug.

Since there are 5 total, I figured they were "spares" in case you somehow manage to lose one (or two, or three). Kind of like sometimes a shirt will have a couple of extra button sewn onto the bottom hem.

I do a lot of camping and some of the more expensive tent or backpack manufacturers will sew on extra bits at random places for spares - zipper pulls, various clasps, latches, stays etc so if you tear one off or lose one in the field, there's a spare handy...

My 02 has two extra lug nuts plus a locking lug nut.. The ones holding the mount TO the door are just nuts with a chrome cap, WHY who knows?

Mine's held on by black ones too.....
