I went outside this morning and noticed a horrible scratch about waist height on the drivers side rear door. It appears to be through the clearcoat and into the paint (I can get a fingernail in it). I was close to writing a nasty letter to my school because of all the dings I had in my cutlass after the fall semester...mainly because I go to college with a bunch of 8 year olds who have no consideration for any one else's property. But the other reason is the parking spaces are unfathomably close together (Not to mention no one knows how to park). After some thinking I realized that I had actually made the scratch myself when squeezing in between my car and someone elses trying to NOT touch the other car . Anyway...in the process of squeezing in, the button on my leatherman sheath did a number on the paint (banghead). The worst part is it sticks out like a sore thumb cuz my liberty is black. Is there anything I can do short of having the whole door repainted?

Yes, there is. A body shop would probably not do this but some people are very skilled with touch up paint.

From what Ive read, they take touch up paint and apply it to the scratch many times until it builds up and is higher than the surrounding paint. Make sure to allow each coat to dry before applying another coat of touch up paint.

After the touch up paint dries, they wet-sand the area till the touch up is level with the surrounding paint. Once this is achieved, they use a rotary buffer with something like Megs #105 to take the sanding marks out.

Ive never wet-sanded but I would say they start out with something like 1500grit then finish off with 2k grit.

Im by all means not an expert with wet-sanding but there are tons of threads about it on Meguiars-online.

Bummer. Every time I go out there's a new scratch or chip on my car. I just tried langka paint repair yesterday on a few chips and scratches. Is it perfect? No. Could it be? Yes, with practice. You fill the scratch/chip like JeepJeepster says, but then with the langka you use the blob eliminator and it activates the paint. Rub until level with the oem surface, and you are done. As I found out yesterday, you must be very very patient and gentle with it, otherwise it's back to step 1. No big deal though. The best part about it is that if you rub to much paint away, you can just start over. But it does take practice and a good amount of elbow grease and patience. There are so many chips and scratches on my car though, it would probably easier to take it and have the bumper and hood painted. Otherwise, I'd be filling chips for the next month.
