I just installed my Evic, but didn't hook it up to constant power. What I hooked it up to, I have no idea, but it makes the EVIC turn off after a while. I tested with a voltmeter and it goes to 5-8 volts after a while and/or when you turn on the lights. Anyway, after searching I found out that you need to hook it up to a constant power source. My question is:
Can you open your garage door with a homelink button with the ignition off and key out? I bet you can't, but want to make sure. It's a security question obviously. You don't want your car or Jeep in this case in your driveway giving thieves the ability to open your garage door. Anyway, just a "just wondering" question. Thanks for the help in advance.

If you hooked everything up as said in the tutorial, then yes it (HomeLink) should work with the key out/off.

thanks for the reply. This tutorial right? http://www.jeepkj.com/evic/
that says hook it up to a power source that is only on when key is on. I forgot to read the whole thing. My apologies. I would have thought that would cause it to NOT work when the ignition is off. I've installed an evic before on my older kj, but can't remember what I hooked the power up to. it was sold and I can't look. dangit! :(

Makes sense that it wouldnt work with the key out but mine does. I had never really thought about it before.

Its no different than having the remote in your Jeep. If they break into it that remote will always work. It would be a neat safety feature but it would get old, I use it a lot with the key off.

Evic

I followed the tutorial when I installed mine. No homelink without the key. My mechanic saw that I had installed an EVIC and told me it should be connected to constant power. He switched it to the way its supposed to be and now homelink works with no key.

The issue I had, though, is when I hooked mine to constant power, the display would come on when the vehicle was off. When I'd first shut the vehicle off, the display would go out. If I came back later on, it was all lit up. Not a huge deal, but I let the KJ sit for 3 days once and it killed the battery.

I actually just pulled the wire last night and need to hook it to an ignition source. I had it on the power outlet in the dash originally.

and a week later your window got busted out and your garage ransacked. Just kidding. I guess I'm trying to avoid this, but I do want to hook it up the right way.

hmm, most criminals are kinda dumb (or at least seem that way)... they may not even know what those buttons are for.

never say never is what I have learned over the years. I think when I get this straightened out they will not work as per my design. Thanks for the help so far everyone.

I guess if you want to be security conscious you will need to clear the frequencies out if you are worried about parking your jeep outside. Luckily I can park inside. Hopefully it never comes to be a problem. The answer to my question is YES. Thanks!!!

Hey, I never thought of that. I park in the garage most nights anyway unless I've got some kind of project going in there. The wife drives a junker that no one in their right mind would steal, plus it leaks oil. So she's stuck outside. We're going to get her something nice in the fall, or she's going to "borrow" my KJ and I'm going to get a diesel truck.

FYI, mine does. I added a 2003 EVIC into my 2007. I had run the "power" wire to the power outlet in the dash. As I mentioned, the result was that the display would go off as the vehicle shut off, but at some point, would come back on and remain lit while the vehicle was off.

I had to poke around in the dash last week, so I disconnected that wire with the intention of running it to an ignition source. I still haven't hooked it up, therefore, I have no working display on the EVIC. All other wires remain connected to the OBD port.

Last night, without thinking, I hit the homelink button, and it worked. Therefore, the "power" wire in the EVIC harness must solely be for the display, and the homelink power source comes from the OBD port.
