First post, I've been trying to figure this problem out. I've replaced the Vehicle speed sensor on the side of the transmission. Didn't work. My repair manual doesn't even list this code. Could the sensor on the top of the differential be bad?

Any help at all will be appreciated.

Thanks, Mike

I had the same problem with mine,it turned out to be the wires where corroded threw on the rear speed sensor(the one on the diff).I just cut out the bad part of the wires and spliced in new ones, fixed it for me.Just check the wires for the rear speed sensor, most likely those are at fault.

Oh by the way P0500 is speed sensor malfunction A.

Does your speedo still work? Im assuming yes which is good since it will only relate to the sensor itself. Look for loose connections where you replaced the 1st sensor and/or frayed wiring. Make sure there is nothing rubbing against something that it shouldn't be (Driveshaft??).

That seems to be a common problem with the KJ....i've heard of several cases where the speed sensor wires have rubbed on the drive shaft, frayed, and therefor, threw the CEL on. In most cases, it also will make the speedo not work (just as you said).

leave it off on long trips, will increase your warranty if you put a lot of miles on

A) He's got a 2002, so I highly doubt he's in warranty unless he purchased some third-partry warranty

B) I've known people to do this, but I'd choose not to for the legal ramifications that could result. Do you plan on checking that box on the title that states that the milage is inaccurate when you go to sell it? MI has that on the title, I assume other states do as well.
