Got a free 02, 4x4. In good shape, except the engine. Was told it is bad, i priced them and they are very expensive for very high milage ones. I started it, and it had a ticking sound, didn't sound like a rod, more like a fifter or something. Anyways, it went away after about 5-6 seconds, and sounded perfectly normal. Is there something else wrong with it, or is it the first sign the engine is going bad? Any help would be great, thanks

From your description it sounds normal. Who said the engine is bad?

Make sure it has 5w-30 oil in it since that's what it's specked for.

You lucked out, congrats and welcome to the forum.

Sorry Dave, I reposted this in the correct forum. I do know the noise comes and goes, his mechanice told him it needs an engine, and that the oil pump was bad on this one.

ok, went out and started, ledt it run till it was warm, went to take it for a drive and the oil light came on for about 3 seconds, then went off for 10 or so, then came back on for 3-4, then back off and so i turned around and went back. Could it just be a oil pump?

I am guessing you checked the oil. After that check the oil pressure sending unit and the wires to it. (right above the oil filter). Easy cheap fix if that is it.

Start saving so you have around 5K for when the engine goes, then you can get a Jasper Reman'd put in it.

Unless you want to take the time and effort to throw a junkyard engine in which may only give you the same issues again down the road...

if these things use the same horrid oil pressure sender chrysler's used since the 80s/90s I'd just replace it first. getting a cheap mechanical oil pressure gauge wouldn't be such a bad thing either. then you really know what's going on with the oil.

oh and damn... I wish I could get free things like this. :D especially a stick shift one I'd go nuts.
