Fuel Filter Question

I'm going to change the fuel filter. I see that Jeep sells what appears to be just the element for about $40, but I recall hearing that the fuel filter was more like $100. Can I change just the $40 element or do I need more components?

Tjkj says it cost $130 since the filter and regulator are one piece.

If you can get it for $40 an its the right piece then let us know.

That ain't the fuel filter for the gasser KJ,that is for the CRD.The fuel filter for the gasser is on the front top edge of the gas tank.You will need to call a dealer to get the correct part#,it is not listed in the parts manuals since it is a "lifetime" filter and is not suposed to be serviced.

Gotcha. Yeah, that's the only reference to a fuel filter I can find in the parts manual. To the dealer I go I guess...(censored)

Is there any possibility of modification to use a standard (less expensive) filter from some other application?

It would cost more to fab something else to work then getting the correct filter since the correct filter also has the pressure regulator in it.

is there a way to remove just the filter element portion from the tank unit and put in an inline filter exterior of the tank?

For those that care, I saw that they have the 45RFE for only $2068 with $165 for shipping. I paid over $2500 for a re-manufactured 1998 Ford Escort transmission. I also saw on there a 42RLE/VLP anyone know what that is?
