fuel overflow

i was just wonderin if anybody has found a fix for the fuel filler neck, mine seems to spill all over the side of the jeep when fuel pump at the gas station shuts off..... i was thinking maybe upsize the neck or put a T in at the top for relief, what do you guys think? Or am i the only one having this problem?

Great thread, I wonder if this has been discussed before. I also have this problem probably 3/4 of the time I fill up. The gas overflows and runs down the side of the jeep, extremely annoying.

Yep, i think its due to the small diameter fill neck, it fills way to fast.

This has got me a couple times as well. I usually try to listen for the sound to change in the flow of fuel when it is getting close to the filler neck and then round off the dollar and be done.

Don't your gas pumps shut off automatically when near full? Overflow has never happened to me in 7 years. And I even round up after the pump shuts off but never had an overflow.

I can't round up, when it shuts the nozzle off....that's it I can't get any more in.
I have never had the overflow problem either, you may want to check the fuel tank vent, it may be plugged?????

I have the problem even with auto shut off pumps... It auto shuts off just as it fuel comes spewing out!

I have this happen, too...but not with all pumps. Some pumps must be more sensitive than others.

It happens to me every single time, its really aggravating. I dont know what year lib. to you guys have that have the spewing problem maybe its all one year?

Simple solution I've found: When the pump stops--DON'T KEEP FILLING IT. =] You can also try removing the nozzle more slowly--if there's an air pocket in there, gradually letting it out will usually allow the fuel to flow into the tank rather than out onto the side.

Exactly as BMR says, the pump shuts off just as gas is spewing out. It's not like we're manually pumping gas in until it shoots out...

From walking through the replies and who has the same problem, this may be an issue with 2005+ years.

Dm1, Flexin and Belvedere, what year are your KJ's?

2003 sport here, like I mentioned in my first post it has only happened a couple times to me, but something else i notice is that most of the time the pump nozzle itself don't have enough clearance to go all the way down to the rubber splash guard thing on the handle of the pump, when for say my neon or most other vehicles the handle drops most the way down to the circular rubber guard. Since the tip of the pump nozzle don't drop all the way in there (for me anyways) by the time the auto shut off on the pump engauges its all ready pretty much coming out your fuel overflow.

Thats my guess?

FWIW I have an '07 Sport and that has never happened to me. The automatic shutoff works everytime.

2002 here and I have never had that happen, even with the vintage pumps I have used in Northern California.

there really is some sort of issue. I previously had an 03. then I got an 04. the first time I filled up the 04 i got gas all over my shoe. I filled it up the same way I always filled up the 03. So, my guess is that they aren't all the same. the 03 never overflowed. so.... that's my 2 cents.

Hmm. Well, it seems like everyone who has posted about having the problem has between an '03 and an '05. Also, could temperature have something to do with it? I was just thinking that if it happened in freezing temperatures, that could be an option. I don't know, just throwing out ideas.

temperature - probably not. first time I filled my 04 it was mid april and nice and mild out.
