I went to fill up my Liberty today, and when I removed the gas cap, something didn't look right. I went ahead and filled it up, closed the cap, and drove home.
Now that I think about it, I think there used to be a 'flap' underneath the gas cap, which is no longer there. I think I remember it being metal, mounted with a spring of some sort. Is this correct, or an I think of someone else's vehicle?
I'm thinking the flap has come off, and the only place I can think it went is down the hole, right into the tank. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? This seems like a tiny problem that is a big problem to 'fix'.
What sort of problem(s) can this cause? Is the flap there to stop splashing, fumes, etc.? Is the flap going to "stop-up" the gas flow within the tank and leave me stranded? Any feedback would be appreciated.
Note that this Liberty is still under warranty. Is this likely to be covered? Would you take it in to get it resolved?
Thanks.
