Socks and I have an '04 kj with a headlight problem. We bought new Hella bulbs and put them in last night, they worked fine. Today we noticed that the drivers side light is not working again (this is the one that was burnt out twice in the last year and a half) the low beam setting wont workbut the high beams are ok. We traded the bulbs around so the right was on the left and the left was on the right but still the same problem. How do I tell if it's the relay that is fried or not? I found the following thread but their where some pic's that I cant see (a little red X shows up where the pic should be), any suggestions?

P.s. Can you tell me where I can find the realy for the headlights?

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
I would be checking the headlight bulb conectors for any signs of shorts or burning/melting.If the conectors look good start checking the wires with a mulitmeter(check the OHM's) for any shorts in the wires.

The headlight relays are located in the fuse box right in front of the battery in the engine bay.

Also the headlight switch could also be bad, shorting out.

Thanks, I'll be looking into this with her. I'll teach her right away the correct way to test electrical circuits with a multimeter.
According to fuse block located inside the vehicle on the drivers side of the dashboard; fuse in position 27 10 Amp Red fuse Headlight High Beam Left
I still need to pop out the fuse tomorrow and check to see if that fuse has blown.
Correct me if I'm wrong but, is the high beam circuit not part of the "Daytime running lights that operate at a percentage of the headlamp bulbs original wattage?
Also, the interior fuse block has a receptacle for a high beam relay, yet there is non fitted. I figure that the headlight high beam relay's are thus fitted in the power distribution box under the hood then?
I do however see a "Daytime running right relay (Square gray unit with cooling fins) mounted to the inside fuse block.
Is it possible that the "Daytime running right relay" is defective? and that only one half of it functions correctly? As the passenger side headlamp functions the way it is supposed to.

Sorry to ask all these questions, it's just that I cannot afford a full factory service manual this month! sad2.gif

Odd. My 06 has the high beam relay but not the DRL relay. Try pulling it out and see which lights work. Also check the continuity of the non-functional light. Also there could be debris in the socket.

Anyhow, an update on the mystery of the headlights.
Still no solution to the problem.
Back to square one and check everything over again.
Now, as far as the headlight relays in the power distribution box under the hood?
Just which of the relays plugged in there are the ones for the headlights?
On the cover of the box, the schematic does not state which is which.
IE. you would think the relay would say "headlight" relay!
Is there a part number that you guys know?
I' am also thinking that the BCM might be at fault. With out Factory diagnostic testing equipment how would one know for sure? Or is that a dealer fix? Also, assuming it is, how long does it take to remove it from behind the side of the dash (Without the use of pry bars and BFH's! :D )

So...do you see the light? :D

Any update?

Good day,

I'm pulling my hair out with this!
If I didn't know any better I'd say that the wiring in this vehicle is made by Lucas!

Turn the head light switch "on" to the low beam setting and both drivers and passenger side lights function properly.
Pull back on the stalk to flash high beams or to turn them on, and only the passenger side works.
Same with the day time running lights. Only the passenger side lights up.
I have so far checked "all" the fuses and all are working.
I replaced the "Day time running light relay" with a new one (Friend at auto parts store gave it to me for free-as he said they wern't cheap! Into the pocket it went...)
Anyhow, that did F__k all.

So, now I'm wondering if the day time running lights circuit is actually powered by the high beam circuit.
That, and possible half oh the high beam relay is faulty.
Back at it today if the weather dries up. It's been ******* out for the last 2 days.

I'll get to the bottom of this sooner or later.

So, if you have any other ideas...

Cheers

It looks to me like the bright lights are indeed the DRL's according to that scematic. Look at the arrow that says 'to DRL.'

Daytime running lights relay= inside fuse panel, upper right hand corner. Head light relays, cavity 26=right high, cavity27=left high, cavity4=right low, cavity5=left low. all inside. Relays should be labeled under lid.

Good day,

As of right now, I've gone from pulling my hair out too pushing them back in one by one ;)

Now...

According to the owners manual (Pages 320-322) numbers 26 and 27 are fuses as are numbers 4 and 5, and not relays. Is that what you mean?

Yes. 4 and 5 are the fuses for the low beams, tied into the low beam relay. 26 and 27 are the fuses for the DRLs. Looks like they are all 10 amp fuses.
