I took my '11 Liberty to Java this morning and the heater was set on a comfy temp, about 1 if you look at the knob like a clock face. After going to Java and home we went to my niece's soccer game and on the way back the vents were pumping out hot air. Knob hadn't moved, still in the 1 o'clock position but the air was like the heater was on full. No amount of adjusting temp or vents made any difference. Even turning on the ac didn't help.

Looks like the temp control is out. Is that a fix that can be done in my garage or do i need to run this into the mechanic?

First things first. How is your coolant level? No visible leaks from the radiator and such?

If the coolant gets low the heat feels like it can cook a chicken. At least in my experience.

Coolant is fine. It was checked and topped off a couple weeks ago when i got the oil changed and the fluids checked for winter. Garage floor is clean, no drips or leaks.

Couldn't be the resistor could it?

That really sounds like you've lost vacuum to the control panel. Put your ear up to panel, engine running, move position switch. listen closely under hood for vacuum hiss also.

I tried this, turned the fan from mid to low speed, couldn't hear a hiss. Moved the temp knob to cold and fan to high to see if that made a hiss and the air changed. Could be my imagination but i thought i heard a click or pop when I moved the temp knob that time with the fan on high. Something stuck maybe that just freed itself? Should I still take it in to be looked at?
