Hello
My daughter has a 2002 Jeep liberty. We only have 1 ignition key and want to have at least 1 more as a back up.
I've been reading that I have to program a new ignition key to be able to use it.
I just called the dealer and they asked the last 8 digits of my VIN and then they would be able to tell me what key and how much.
They told me that the Key would be $17.99 and did not need to be programmed.
My confusion is that everything I have read to date says that my key requires a transponder or chip.
Can any one help me with a definitive answer before I waste any time driving to a dealer.
Thank you
Tony

I'm not too sure but what color is your key?
Black or grey?

Also do you see a key icon in the on position?

If you have a black key you don't have a chip! You can get it made at any key-making place. I got mine at Lowes.

Black ignition key

If you have the black ignition key as my 2003 does, there is no chip so you can have a key made anywhere keys are made. $18 for a key is a premium price but if made from the Vin number may be worth it to you as you are not duplicating a worn key. The other side of the argument is that keys and lock cylinders wear together so it is better to duplicate your existing key. Myself, I have backup keys made at a locksmith's store where I do business. $3.50 and out the door.

Tip: If you have a chip in a vehicle and have 2 keys with chips, buy a third blank one off ebay with a chip usually $7-10 , have the locksmith cut the key $3.50 in my case, and use the 2 existing keys to program the 3rd key. Directions come with the blank key. $10 cost sure beat having dealer make one as my last dealer made one was $110 for a PT Cruiser. Having 3 programmed keys with chips is good insurance in case you lose one. Murphys law though is that once you have the third programmed key you will never lose one! Again cheap insurance.

Thank you every one for your responses.
Her key is Black and no Signs of a chip.
I'm going to go ahead and assume (I know what your thinking) there is no chip.
I will get one cut and get back to everyone .
Thank you again.

Along these lines, I have only one key, with chip. What are my options? I know I can get a key without a chip to unlock it, but it won't start it.

2nd key

Unfortunately, the dealer is where to go for a 2nd chip key, $100 to $120 so shop around. If you don't have a second key and something happens to the first one, then you can add the cost of a tow to the dealer to have a new key made and then you still have only one key. After getting a 2nd chip key, then follow the Tip

Tip: If you have a chip in a vehicle and have 2 keys with chips, buy a third blank one off ebay with a chip usually $7-10 , have the locksmith cut the key $3.50 in my case, and use the 2 existing keys to program the 3rd key. update
Her Key is Black
We ordered a spare key and a remote fob. Actually she only had one of each and me being the dad that I am went ahead and bought two of each. She is going to lose at least one of them sooner or later. She now has 3 keys and 3 fobs. Her original and now 2 spare.
I got the keys cut at Ace Hardware and no chip , both new keys work terrific.
We started programming the new Fobs and all excepted the programming but we noticed once done the original fob no longer worked but we had two working just fine. Next we programmed the original and now only one of the new Fobs is working. It seems that for whatever reason we can only have 2 remote Fobs programmed at any given time. If that's the case I am still ok with it but just thought I'd ask if that is normal or have I miss d some step.
Thank you again for all the valuable feed back.
