Hi All, so...will anyone be able to identify these parts/accessories on the attached images for me? About a week after changing my calipers, brake pads, and rotors I started hearing the sound of some metal scraping against something else. After some internet browsing I was convinced that I was a victim of driving on some road construction site that gifted me with a rock stuck in between the plate and the rotors but...turns out (after going back to the shop that did the installation) that these rusty dead looking things were the culprits. The mechanic said they were "hanging on or by the calipers". He had never seen these before on anyone's car and made the assumption that their purpose was to keep dirt away from the calipers. I have a 03' Jeep Liberty. Which one of you will figure this out for me! I've scoured the internet for something that resembles them but no luck. I am DYING to know!

Thanks much for the help!

Thanks! So, tell me more about this recall...is this fix was to indeed keep away dirt from the calipers? The mechanic said there were no bolts/screws to keep them in place at all. Sounds weird.

They clipped on, no bolts or anything , so no, not weird

Thanks! Is it ok to not put them back? They were creating a lot of metal scraping noises!

I would definitely put them back. They are there to protect the lower ball joints from the heat generated by the brakes. Without them, the boots on the ball joints will deteriorate a lot faster.

If they are causing scraping noises they are probably bent, and touching something. You should be able to just bend them back into the proper shape.

You need a new mechanic and you should put those back on or replace them with new ones.
