Hi, I have a 2004 Liberty Renegade with 99,000 miles and the 4x4 shifter on the side of the console. Have not done any towing-mostly highway miles.

The problem I have is that when I disengage the transfer case I get a clunk/shudder like I ran over a bump usually within 15-30 seconds after moving the lever back to 2WD.

I never changed the transfer case fluid until a few months ago (realize I should have) and just changed it again today. Same issue (I tried it on dry pavement).

Any ideas on what is causing this? I don't like the idea of taking it to a transmission shop as I think they will charge too much or not know what to do.

Thinking of selling if I can't get this fixed.

Thanks much!

Anything is fixable and no reason alone to sell it.
Lets start with the obvious the transfer case requires ATF+4 transmission fluid.
I assume this is what you used?

It could just be one of the bushings on the front diff. Mine does it from time to time. I looked at the bushings and they look ok but if I am under and have wife shift it, I know crazy man, I see it move just enough to sometimes make the noise. Not a biggie, at least mine isn't.

Go with the other ideas.

Then look under your Rennie. Do you see skids plates and front tow hooks? If you do, you need to remove them immediately. Just put the Jeep up on some ramps, take them off, and set them aside.

I will be down this weekend to get them out of your garage so they aren't in your way.:killit:
I don't know if that will solve you problem, but it will solve one of miine:smokin:

Thanks. I did use ATF+4. I actually changed the fluid because of the rough disengagement. It is really a hard clunk/shudder not just a little one. I am taking it to a local shop later this week. He said he can inspect the externals, but doesn't rebuild the internals he replaces with a rebuilt unit.

I am hoping it's external.

I say get another Jeep owner to take your Libby for a test drive. It may be normal.

My 04 Liberty Sport clunks a bit when shifting from/to 4WD, especially when it's under load. 4WD Lo makes even more noise if I don't do it just so.

Do you trust this mechanic? He may be trying to fleece you if he thinks you don't know your Jeeps.

The transmission shop told me that it seemed to him like the transfer case was not fully disengaging 4WD. I also have a whine towards the front of the Jeep.

Anyone have any thoughts or input? Does this seem possible? I am thinking of swapping out the transfer case with a used one.

Go to L.O.S.T. KJ Forum. A guy there has a 242 for sale...I think it is 250 or something like that. Might be a good option.
