Well coming back from the cottage I hit a bird doing 130KM/H took out my front grill and and grill support and also took the windshield out, causing $1400 in damage, so I put it through insurace, $300 deductable, ask the body shop what type of windshield they would be putting in they said a PPG which if I understand is OEM?, also said they would be using new NOS parts and told me they would provide me with all recipts from the dealership, anyways I needed a new windshiled anyways mine was all pitted pretty bad. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it

Man. that was one big bird you hit at 130 KPH (81 MPH).

PPG glass is aftermarket glass. OEM glass is Chrysler Safe Guard with the old Chrysler star logo on it.

OEM glass....

1. What was once old is new again. They're gonna start using the Pentastar again! :D

2. PPG is the supplier for all Chrysler's glass.

- They never stopped using it on parts.

- PPG may be the supplier, but unless it has the logo, it is not OEM. Most aftermarket parts, including glass is of cheaper quality than OEM... hence a lower price and you aren't paying name brand prices.

I hit a turkey @ 70 MPH one time in an S10 work truck. Took flight as I approached and I saw it out of the corner of my eye as I hit it. Ended up impacting the center of the windshield and also caved the roof in. Sounded like a bomb went off inside the cab. I was covered in glass and half deaf.

Wow, that's a lot of damage for one (BIG) bird! Sorry about that, at least your deductible is fairly low. Birds aren't something you usually think about when you're driving your car. I fly jets for living and we work hard to avoid them because hitting a bird at 300+ mph can sorta ruin your day... but it's good to remember that even at highway speed they can still be dangerous (and expensive.)

Oh yeah, Jets and birds don't mix. As a former aircraft mechanic I have seen the devastation of those little birdies first hand. Uuuuggggghhhh!

If that is a Canadair Regional Jet, the windshield has three rather thick layers of glass with a fine translucent layer of gold between them. The gold layer serves as a electrical conductor that heats the windshield, making it more pliable to better survive a bird strike... I guess it also keeps ice off the windshield, too.
