Not to be mean or anything, but read the manual. Its in there. If you don't have a manual, that's another story.

Not to be mean or anything, but there is not a procedure in the owner's manual stating exactly how to drain the fuel/water separator; only to "drain the accumulated water from the fuel/water separator drain provided." It's not in the owner's manual, but is in the service manual.

Polaraman, this previous link in the "General Discussion" section should help :

Thanks for posting the link. I had been wondering too. Not exactly a friendly procedure to be done at fill up time. Sorry for that.

Alot of the ford PSD guys say drain it about once a month. My 6.0 hasnt been drained in 18 months and the light hasnt come on. If you go to a station with a high turn over of fuel you'll be getting good stuff and probably wont have a problem. If you keep getting the light to come on then I would find another place to fill up.

Ideally the fuel/water separator should be drained with some set frequency......maybe every other fill-up. Contaminated fuel is not the only source of water in fuel........condensation occurs as well. If you're pumping 50*F fuel out of an underground tank and it's 85*F outside, some condensation, although slight, is entirely possible.
The key is to drain it with some frequency to prevent the water-in-fuel light from coming on........preventive maintenance. If you wait until the water-in-fuel light is on, it's too late and given the complexity of the CP3 and today's newer fuel injection systems on diesels, draining occasionally is cheap insurance.
The CRD gets drained every 3rd fill-up; my 2003 Dodge RAM 2500 CTD gets it about every other fill-up.
