I got in my jeep the other day and when I turned the key to start the jeep nothing happen. My dash lights turned on light normal but the ignition didn’t even make a noise. I turned the Key twice and nothing happened. I took the key out and put it back in and turned it a few times. Nothing happened. So I pulled the key out and cursed up a storm and then tried starting it again and it work with no issues what so ever.

Has anyone had this happen?

Thanks!

Sounds to me something in the ignition switch in the column was not having a good day. You need to whisper sweet nothings in her ear, not curse up a storm in her general direction.

Well the cursing did seem to work lol It did start up after I drop a few F bombs.

hahaha, thats a funny image.

Could be a starter on its way out, could be a bad connection at the battery, bad ignition, couple of things it could be.

That is strange. But your dash lights lit up though. Starter connection ?? I don't know what to say, except you must have used some real powerful jeep words...:D

Just to rule out the obvious, do a quick inspection of your grounds and make sure there's not excessive corrosion on the battery terminals. You'd be surprised how much hell corroded terminals can cause.

Mine did it when it when it was real cold out (4 degrees F) and had sat for a few days.....I tried several times then just held the key in the start position and it started after 3-5 seconds....Now its fine.....It seems to me that if you turn the key quickly to the start position, there is always a very slight delay anyway.....also checked battery terms & they were OK....Maybe one of the little gods that live in the computer was sleeping...Joe W

Sentry Key System fault maybe? Surely won't be the first time something like this has been posted.

I was thinking the same thing. My mother has been having the same issue with her car.

I'll have to check my ground connections and battery tonight after work.

Sentry will completely render the vehcile dead? Reason I ask is because currently the sentry bypass in my KJ isn't working properly with my remote starter. It'll start, but after 3-5 seconds it shuts down. I think his problem is more "old school" and mechanical/electrical.

Nope, that's a Sentry Key fault.

And that's exactly how it behaves when you start your Jeep minus the chip.

With my '06 (and the other '06s I've "tested" at work, hehehehe) the Jeep will refuse to even crank if the chip is not detected, and it throws a code (that doesn't set off the CEL).

My sister's '05 will crank then shut down. If you try to start it again, it will just crank and crank but never turn over.

That's wierd - mine will start every time, runs perfectly fine, then it chimes and shuts itself down.

I truly do not think this is the problem.

How do you know if you have a Sentry Key? Mine is a 2005 Liberty Sport 4x4 w/3.7 engine.

Similiar problems with starting. Sometimes it starts for 2 seconds then dies. Will only crank for a while. Or sometimes absolutley nothing, no cranking. Take key in and out a few times and then it starts.

If it's an '05+, it has Sentry

I guess I do not understand what/how Sentry key works.... my keys do not show an exposed bump for a microchip. Just the "head" has a remote fob built in, that locks/unlocks the doors and opens therear hatch. Also has a red panic button.

So how does this key interact with the starting system besides mechanically turning the ignition switch?

To be honest, I am not sure exactly how the key plays into the equation. All I know is somehow the key plays a role in transmitting a certain RF frequency. Each key has a different one (or at least, there are several different ones). When the correct frequency is detected at startup, everything is cool. You can program different frequencies to be "allowable".

It should be noted that this is only needed at startup. Once the vehicle is running, it's no longer needed.

OK that is DEFINITELY, 100% a Sentry Key issue.

And yes you have Sentry Key. :)
