I just bought a 02 Jeep Liberty Sport, and although I dont have a FOB (none came with the truck when i bought it...), I was wondering if there is an easy way to tell if the truck has the option installed? I dont know if it possible to tell without taking it to a dealer, but I figured I would ask...

I am interested in gettin a keyless entry system, but was hoping that it would a simple matter of getting a used FOB and programming it...

If the truck doesnt have the system installed, what kind of system do you recommend looking into?

Thanks,
-R

(welcome)

I'd start off by requesting a build sheet, that should tell you that and a lot more...

Welcome to the site!

Without a keyfob I'm not sure how to tell other than going to dealer to find out. I would take a guess it does have keyless entry simply b/c vehicles after ohh say 1997 came standard unless the owner requested not to have it. (which I know ppl who have done that b/c there cheap *****.)

I'm not sure if any liberty was sold w/o keyless entry. Assuming it was, you can get a new keyfob but they're hella expensive. Depending on the mfg those can run anywhere between $150 - $300. Which is why you were sold the libby without the keyfob. The original owner lost both of them, went back to the dealer to get a replacement and balked at the cost.

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
It is a simple task, just go to the dealership(or call) and give them the last 8 if the VIN and they can tell you if you have it or not, make sure you talk to the parts department.

If you do have it the dealership will have to program it.

I'm really surprised there's no aftermarket key fob you cold buy. I mean I totally understand the deal with the encoded ignition keys and why they're so expensive.

I had a conversation with a doctor once who told me that to get a new key made for his Mercedes car the request had to be made with the factory in Germany, imagine! Maybe the request for our key fobs has to be made in Toledo :p

I guess what all this boils down to is any key/fob etc for any vehicle these days is EXPENSIVE.......... The days of getting a key cut at any hardware store for 99 cents is way long gone.

When buying any used vehicle insist on getting 2 working keys/fobs etc, or subtract the cost of a replacement off the price of the vehicle. And if you have 2 working ones you better not lose one unless you have money to burn.

Just some thoughts.

Or a BMW or Mercedes keyfob.
I'll never have to worry about those...way out of my price range;)
Seeing that the drivers door was the only door with a key access, it was becoming a real pain in the **** to unlock everything from that door. Well at least I now have 2 programmed keys so I won't have to pay for programming anymore.

Just wondering because I currently have just one fob. I was just going to buy another fob off ebay and reprogram it. I have seen them for as cheap as just a couple of dollars on there.

Might possibly work with 02-04 KJ. 02-04 is different keys/fobs and system. Owners manual for 02-04 should detail programming.

That website doesn't list 05-07 that I found anyway.

The 05-07 is different. The key/fob is all one unit unlike the earlier models. My owners manual for my 05 says you need 2 working transponder keys to program a 3rd one. Then it gives instructions to program the 3rd key yourself.

Do it. Let us know how it works. I'll bet it'll work.

OK, that is the difference. I have an 03, so I have a regular key and the keyless remote is separate. I can get a replacement key and a new fob for less than $10 bucks. Just need to get the key cut and program the fob using the one I already have.

The OP stated he has an 02, so he should be able to get key fobs pretty cheap on ebay and then have the dealership program them.
