Do you guys have the same problem; Whenever my liberty is on 4x4 Full Time it would bang when I accelarate after a short coast at between 5-15 mph.
It feels like there is a gap between gears, and it bangs to gear before accellarating every time. It is more obvious on 4x4 Full Time and minimal on 2x4.
My liberty is at 26k.

Thank You

drivetrain lash.. thanks.

Two dealers simply ignored and say "why are you driving in 4x4FT, it shouldn't do it in 2x4" I said that's why I got selec-trac, to be able to drive on dry pavement whenever I feel need for that. He kept insisting that I should not use 4x4FT at all, and use PT whenever it is very slippery. I did not want to get into argument with him, so I said OK.

When I asked him about the bang, he said "this is a truck, and has two transmissions, it is a normal bang".

These guys are killing me.

It's normal, you mean it is because of traction? But I believe there is almost zero traction during the time between I hit accel. and the time it actually starts accellarating.. It could be a split second, but believe me, there is a gap.. 8-[ I love my Liberty, but this noise makes me worry, I am thinking it is getting louder and louder and may finally break something.

Mine has driveline lash or sometimes referred to as slack...completely normal.

I think you might need to find a new dealership...LOL

I don't hear a HUGE bang, I also don't have the Selec-Trac, but I definitely feel the drivetrain lash under the conditions you posted! 2WD and especially 4WD. I also hear a "clunk". That much is normal.

Can you explain the logic behind it? I am trying to visualize what is going on, but is it because of transmission is not in synch or is there really a gap between gears?

smitty1938, I did not have any "bang" on my KJ during first half year, which I did about 5-6k miles.

FWIW-

I have a 2005 Sport with Command-Trac and hear the clunking noise when I go from reverse to drive in 2WD. It's not consistent, but it does happen fairly often. I think I have about 20,000 miles on the 'meter.

TRowe,

That noise is there in certain conditions, like when the jeep is cold, or if I left it at an incline, or just any other reason. I know it bangs into Drive sometimes, or sometimes it does it slowly you can hear the gears changing or moving around with subtle GRRRR noise if your windows are down..

But the one I am referring happens while driving and it is linked to accelerator, and the gap in gear(s). The difference or space between "Wheels spinning the gears" and "engine spinning the gears". :-s Did that make sense?

I am not sure if this would happen in manual trannies.

Ok, I've gotcha. I should have paid more attention to your first post. I've never heard the clunking when the Jeep was already in motion; just a clunk right after I put it into drive and begin to accelerate.
