The back story on this is, I bought 3 Liberties, an 04 and 2 03's all with 3.7L engines. One was water damaged but ran, one hit a deer and had front end damage and the third had a missing fender flare, broken mirror and a seized engine. The 04 is my first project. I stripped the engine, transmission, and t-case and inspected it, no real issues except of course for the siezed engine, so I replaced the engine and stuck the drive train back in. Not all the wiring matched up but that was easy enough to fix by swapping a couple of sensors couldn't fix. Now everything is hooked up right but she won't start, there are no obd codes triggered and I can't seem to find any issues. It turns over fine but I can hear what sounds like somthing big dropping in water and sometimes it quietly backfires. It is getting fuel and spark but does not want to fire. Any auggestions?

My first suggestion would be to take it to the KJ forum, not the KK (2008+) Liberty forum. While I'm sure the problem might be something that someone here could solve, you will get a lot more views (and hopefully ideas) if you post in the correct place.

I don't mean to sound cranky, but that's the purpose of the separate forums.

Its either timing issue, or a burnt/bent valve. Especially if you hear the sound of "something dropping in water". Check compression first, then check the timing to see where it is at. If you are getting spark and fuel, then valve train would be a focus.
