Most people haven't replaced their muffler becasue it doesn't really do anything. Upgrading the muffler in most cases is just the same as tossing money away so I don't think many people here have looked in to it to answer your question.

Wish I had an answer for you but I myself don't.

I replaced my muffler with an aftermarket, and if memory serves me correctly, I believe it was a 2.25" inlet and outlet. I can double check.

I have a thrush 2.5 in and out no gains noticed just sounds louder, I cut the rest of the pipe out from the back end so my exhuast ends at the end of my muffler and does not continue to exit near the rear.

I verified mine, measuring with calipers to remove any doubt about size. I did put on a 2.25" I.D. inlet/outlet muffler, shorter than the stock one. The pipe after the muffler is indeed 2.25" I.D., so I used an adapter pipe to go from the new muffler to the old tail pipe. Look at your muffler and you'll see the tail pipe step down in diameter right at the muffler. I cut the pipe off right at the muffler which left a stubby step flange for me to weld the adapter pipe to. Make it a bolt on deal, and you'll likely be dealing with exhaust leaks because the tail pipe bends right after the muffler (barely no straight fitment). For the front, I cut the bolt flange off the original muffler, and the new muffler slipped right onto that flange. I then welded everything together as one.

Unbolt the flange on the front of the muffler. Bolt in new muffler/tailpipe.

Where's the cutting?

I wasn't able to remove the rear tailpipe without cutting it off the muffler. Stock muffler and tailpipe are one piece welded.

Yes you can. I got my old one off and new one on in one piece. My previous pics shows it all as one welded together unit. Jacking up the body and letting the rearend droop helps to give more clearance. There is NO cutting required to replace a cat-back.
