Greetings everyone,

My wife recently bought a 2005 Liberty Limited with ~28K miles to replace her beloved '98 Cherokee Sport. Last Friday she called me to say that coolant temp rose and she heard "chirping or squealing, like a belt but not really, then it puked some coolant". I thought that was odd, sounds like a water pump but it's too new to need one. It is still under warranty so she had it towed to the Jeep dealer that she bought it from. Today she called them and they couldn't find her car on the lot! OK, called the tow company (who was sent by the dealer) and it turns out that they took it to the Dodge dealer down the road from the Chrysler/Jeep place. The Dodge dealer actually did the repair and it was covered under the warranty. We're going to pick it up later this evening. I spoke to someone today who also mentioned a low mileage Liberty the needed a WP. Is this common?

This won't be the first '05 I've heard of with a water pump issue.

Ditto. I'm beginning to wonder if there's a bad batch of them running around out there....

Anyways, from what the symptoms given were, it sounds exactly like a faulty water pump. Hope the engine didn't get too hot for too long.

You will see some bad parts like that. Since weve only heard of a few I wouldnt be looking for a recall anytime soon.

How many failed ball-joints did we see before a recall came out?

And yes, its odd that the water pump failed that early. It seems like Jeeps have always had problems with water pumps. Weve put two on our 94 grand.. But the first one lasted longer tham 28k. Im thinking it was 80k or so.

My sister's '05 is a late '05 build date and hasn't had any water pump issues after 36k.

I wonder if the early ones have issues? or does it matter?

Crap, I hope mine's not a faulty one. Maybe it already got replaced, even... Had 21k on it when I bought it, about 100 miles from the 36K mark now. I really hope I don't have a faulty water pump...

Fortunately she was close to home and had the presence of mind to turn the A/C off and watch the gauge (went down immediately). Ironically (or maybe not) one of the reasons she wanted a new(er) vehicle was that her Cherokee's water pump was making noise. I suggested replacing the pump not the car, but once she had her mind set...

If it would help you guys out, I can get the VIN and/or build date.

Don't need the VIN, but the build date would be awesome if you don't mind....Maybe we can compile the build dates from those who have had their water pumps fail, and possibly narrow it down some...

Congratulations. My wife or daughter would have just kept driving until the whole thing blew up. Count you're blessings.
