Hello, I have a Jeep Liberty Sport, Freedom Edition, 2003. Well maintained 138k miles. How do I ask a question, regarding temp gauge, not overheating, thermostat just replaced, now mechanic (over the phone) says head gasket. Thank you.

We need more information than that. What is the jeep doing? What symptoms are you having? Do you have heat, does the jeep smoke? Etc

Has heat then loses heat when I gIve it gas it loses heat oil is not milky looking engine doesn't appear to be overheating. temperature gauge goes up and it gets cool then it comes back down a little bit and I feel heat.

Has the water pump ever been replaced?

I'll check on the water pump, not sure. How would I know if the wp is bad? Check back in tomorrow, thank you.

The water pump will have a noticeable amount of play if it is bad. Or you can remove it and make sure the impeller is not free from the shaft. You hold one hand on the impeller and one on the pulley. If one moves and the other doesn't, time for a new one.
