No back up lights

I have an 03 Liberty sport limited with a 3.7. my back up lights suddenly quit working and I was told the neutral safety switch was bad. I don't know if this is true or if somebody is just trying to sell parts. Any help from someone more knowledgeable than myself would be greatly appreciated.
