Anybody own a good OBD II scan tool that's PC based they recommend?

I was looking at the Elmscan327.

I asked the same thing around a year or so ago and never did really find anything.

I went ahead and got the ScanGauge2 which seems to be pretty awesome. Hopefully Ill be able to program it to tell me Horsepower numbers, ****** temp, and a few other things. :D

Check out autotap.com

Haven't tried it on the KJ yet, but I have the enhanced parameters for GM. Works great! You can get either a PDA or Laptop version. I have PDA.

The standard version will clear codes and do basic parameters. The enhanced version is aweesome. Shows knock ****** (timing), transmission pressures, misfires, anything you'd want to know (and some you don't!). Also gives the ability to log and export to a .csv for manipulation/graphing in excel.

I'd like to get something like the autotap, but that seems a bit out of my budget.

I've seen the carchip before, but I would really like something I could plug my laptop into to give live info.

If I had the cash I'd spring for the autotap. That seems to be what I'm looking for.

Looks like I just might have to start saving my pennies.

This is one of those things where I want to buy the best I can afford, but I also have to be practical about it and aske myself how often am I going to use it.

Tools are always and investment that will pay for themselve though.

I'm torn.

What do you really plan on logging with it? For general parameters and clearing codes, the basic autotap is fine. I forget the cost of basic, but I remember it being much cheaper than enhanced.

EVERYONE in my family owns (no leasing) GM's, except for me now with my KJ and my Brother's Sonata. I figured as the cars get up there in age, it'll pay for itself.

I was going to recommend the Autotap. A friend had one that he hooked to a PC in his truck with the monitor on the dash. He was real happy with his setup until he sold his truck.

I want something that can actually show me what sensors and things are doing opposed to just clearing a code.

I might save up and buy the Autotap or something equivalent.

The thing I like about the Auterra is that it will connect to just about any vehicle, all protocols are included. Supposedly the software inside the interface can also be upgraded if a new protocol comes along.
It does all the graphing and recording of sensor data.
