When I was admiring my rear OME springs the other day, I noticed that the bottom of the rear diff has some oil residue on it.

So with that...could it be:
1. Pinion seal (didn't look too close to the driveshaft, but will when it's light out)
2. Or the RTV for the rear diff is bad or something? (If near the driveshaft is dry?)

Any ideas? Got about 80k on it. Thanks in advance.

HJ, if it hasn't ever been swapped out, I suggest you attend to it immediately.

Pull the plug first and see if it is low out of curiousity but then change it anyway.

The secret to applying the RTV is to get both mating surfaces level and free of left over particles before applying the new RTV.
I have used a spray gasket remover and then a plastic hand ice scraper to get the surface clean, without damaging /gouging the metal surfaces.
Then allow it to dry for 30 minutes after torquing the bolts up, and re-filling with GL5.
It is possible that the RTV is not seated properly and or bolts not tight enough.
If I could access the lube locker gaskets, I would use those and eliminate the PIA cleaning of RTV each time. Apparently they can be re-used a few times.
Inspect the Pinion in the am with a bright light as well.
I also like Dave's idea of confirming the oil level to see if it is low.

1-Napa Gasket Remover
2-I use....Permatex Gasket Remover.
Available at most good parts store.
Scrape off most of the thickness of the left over RTV then use the gasket remover.
- use gloves and cover eyes for protection. Leave on for about 15 minutes,
Scrape off with plastic scraper.
Final clean w/ brake cleaner and dry before apply new RTV.
Note: I think Permatex has a new brush on one, I have this old can of Permatex.

Makes short work of old RTV when changing diff oil.

Oh and any oil on the outside of any diff is not normal, not normal for Dana axles or any other.

I did, also had there cordless 3" cutoff tool but I traded both in for a new IR Titanium 1/2" impact which my old IR Titanium started to get a little weak after 10 years of heavy use.I did not use them much and they took up alot of space in my already overfilled toolbox.I was really trying to get my hands on a "non-street legal" IR Thunder Gun,***** that they are commercially not available due to there ultra high decibal levels.
