I acquired a set of MOABs for my 04 Liberty and they should be there about Mid-Week next week. From the pictures I have seen of them they have quite a few scratches and rock rash on them, nothing horrible. I was thinking about painting them once I get them. My question is, if I paint the wheels are the edges going to chip off when they mount the tires on them?

Thanks,

-Ryan

P.S. I kinda wanted to paint them on friday and have them mounted on saturday, but idk if I should let them have more drying time.

I think there are two types of moabs (rubicons) the newer ones have thicker coating on it. Depends on painting process it may result in cheaping/rubbing because of that coat. I saw a few people with black/gunmetal color moabs at LOST.

Whats this about a coating?

I have moabs from an 06 and idk anything about this.

Painting rims then having the tires mounted the next day wont work.

I just went out and checked mine. These are from an '04 Rubi. Mine are scarred from the tire machine too, but you are not going to get away from that if you ever want to change your tires again.

I think I would get your rims Media blasted, then powdercoated. It will be the best finish for the rims, since thats probably whats on them now. Then a gooooood coat of sealant to seal that powder finish.

By the way, what years had the machined finished wheels?

The rims are being delivered to my house most likely on Wednesday. I'll have to wait for the weekend to get home to check the condition of them since I cannot really tell for sure how beat up they are from the pictures. If they are just scuffed up a bit and the edge/lip damage isn't too bad, then ill have them mounted this weekend. If not what kind of prices am I looking at to have them (5) media blasted. Will sandblasting be ok or is that going to be too abrasive...I've heard people using sugar or baking soda.

Thanks for the help and suggestions!

I don't know what that would cost, but it would be the best idea for the rims IF they are in rough shape. Painting them and then mounting the next day is not a good plan, like Jeepjeepster said.

As far as the blasting media goes, sand will probably etch the aluminum. A freind of mine use to have his aluminum motorcycle parts Glass-beaded. But today anything goes, as long as it doesn't hurt the parts to be cleaned.

My Moab problems are that I can't get my 235/70's to mount and bead up to the rim. :((banghead) (Argh)
